I've heard bandsters talk about having an "id card" of some sort that you present at restaurants that allows people to buy off the kids' menu at because of the limited amount that can be consumed in one sitting. Does anyone know where to get one of these ID cards from?

I don't ever order off the kids menu becuase the food is usually pizza, chicken fingers, hot dogs, etc. Instead, I order an appetizer or ask someone if they want to share or just eat what I want and take the rest home.

You should be able to get one from your doctor. I have one, but have honestly never used it. I just ask the waiter when it's my turn to order, "is it okay if I order off the kids' menu?" and honestly, I've NEVER had one reject me. The card does give you an added sense of confidence, although I'm not really sure how I would handle it if I ever actually had to pull it out.

Same here, I just say that my diet is medically restricted and nobody has refused.

You can print your own if you like. Here is a link that gives you different designs to choose from:

I almost always order off the kids menu. I actually did it for lunch today. I've never had anyone tell me no when I ask if I can. Sometimes I do ask if I can get 1/2 portion - sometimes they'll allow that as well.

I'm actually getting banded tomorrow (excitement, nervousness, all that good stuff, LOL).

But, I'm hoping that my doc does give me one of these cards. I think the thing that it would be most useful for is buffets... I'm not a big buffet person to begin with, but my family loves casinos. So whenever I visit my parents in San Diego or my sister and her fam in New Orleans, we always end up hitting buffets.

That personal anecdote aside, I would think that buffets would be the place where they would argue most against you getting the kids' price for entry. And I just couldn't justify paying $20 plus to just eat a few pieces of chicken breast! LOL

HI,

I got my discount card from my doctor. I have not had a chance to use it yet but a few friends of mine who have already been banded use them all the time and most restaurants here in the Tampa area are pretty good about allowing ordering off kids menu or discounted smaller portions of a adult meal.

HI -- Im in Land O Lakes and my surgeon is Dr. Jessee. I don't think she has a card like this. Which surgeon are you using?

My doctor gives me one after the first fill, but I agree with "Just Banded" that the kids menu isn't really the best choices. appetizers work best and it is so surprising how much food an appetizer is! Sharing is fantastic too. Now, a buffet might be good to have a "child size" card. Good luck!

My card also serves as a medical alert card in case of emergency. My doctor provided it. It says that my stomach is restricted not to intubate, etc. I carry it in my wallet along with my driver's license, just in case I'm in an accident and can't speak for myself. The other side explains that I can't medically eat a normal portion of food, and describes the size of my stomach capacity. I've never used it in a restaurant, but I've been tempted to try.

They never gave me a card for restaurants but I did get a Medical Alert wallet card that just bascially says that I have a band that fills to 10cc's, and caution needs to be taken for abdominal procedures and prescribing ulcerogenic meds. On the back the same information is repeated in four other languages. I was also told that there was a potential for problems at the airport...not for the walk through security scanners but the hand-held wands can go off if waved around the port area. I was told that I should offer this card if that ever happens.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
