Dr. Spivak in Houston Texas

Recommended Posts

I got banded on 7/16/08 by Dr. Spivak and was wondering if there were any other Spivak banders using this site? It's nice to exchange information with all of the banders here but it would also be nice to exchange info with those who used the same doctor.

I was banded by Spivak back in November of 2005. I have not been on this site in quite some time, but I am looking around again:)

Do you go to his support group meetings and do you find them helpful?

I have not gone to any of his support group meetings, I would like to... but I live too far out of Houston to attend those.

Hey Heather, he says on his site that we should expect 50% of the desired loss in the first 18 months and I thought that is way too slow (for me it will be like 50 lbs in 77 weeks!). You are doing great. Did it take that long to lose?

AntiqueJunkie, have you been banded yet? Did you end up using Dr. Spivak?

Here I am! Yep....I am part of the SPIVAK FAN CLUB! Last fill was this last spring, and glad to say I am nowhere filled near the limit of my band AND am below goal weight now.

He gave you a goal? He didn't give me a goal weight. I love him and continue to recommend him and his staff to anyone who asks but we never sat down and plotted a course or a goal. He just told me to not think about the band, but to live my life and try to keep the calories between 800-1100 a day. If I'm eating more than that, then it's time to come back for a fill.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
