A bit of gas pain advice from a post-op bandster

Recommended Posts

Since i am now 6 days post-op and have experienced this first-hand, i would highly recommend keeping this in mind. When they tell you to get gas medicine for the gas pain you will have post-op, don't just get one - buy 2 or 3... have it on hand! I bought gas-x dissolving strips - figured something else must be wrong since they weren't working .. i was in such severe pain earlier today i called the doc fearing the worst .. he suggested i try another gas medicine.. lo and behold .. that one worked.. it was the liquid walgreen's brand of maalox ... hallelujah! for his knowledge. I have found relief. Anyways, just keep that in mind that the med you buy might not necessarily work for you .. just trying to keep you from being miserable

Thanks for the info, I was banded on the 16th and have been having pretty significant gas pains. I tried one gas med without any luck, and was getting pretty frustrated. Will definiately be shopping for more.

That's great if i can help one person from going thru what i went thru with this pain. The gas pain was so bad sometimes. I had a hiatal hernia fixed at the same time i had my band done and the doc said that my stomach is kind of like an upside-down coke bottle where the bubbles go to the top and can't come back down to come out. He also said i may be swallowing air when i eat - which adds to the gas .. i guess my days of chewing gum are over because i know before i had the band i would burp quite often while chewing gum. But if you feel like i can't take a full breath sometimes and have some pain in your side or your shoulder, try a different gas med. I am sipping this stuff like it's going out of style now.

So to all the bandsters on this gas forum thread, did the liquid maalox help you out of something else. Thanks!

I never tried the liquid Maalox, I used the Gas-X strips, and they helped a little bit. I know that didn't answer your question, but I hope it helped a little bit.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
