2wks post op...how long till I can eat normal food?

Recommended Posts

Hi

I'm just wondering how long it takes before I will be able to go from eating mushy food to normal textured food? I'm 2wks post op, had fluids the 1st week, mushies the 2nd week and last night I ate a few bites of soft flaky salmon and the pain was TERRIBLE. it lasted for about 15 mins,I felt really sick and eventually I did a couple of burps bringing up a load of frothy slime( sorry to be so graphic) and the pain eased off. I think the food mustve got stuck. I thought I'd chewed it up enough and was really shocked at what happenend.I'm scared now at the prospect of going onto solid food

Does it take a long time to gradually wean back onto proper food? And also will i be able to eat salad? I love a nice salad! What about crunchy food like apples?

Any advice would be appreciated, thanks!

Julia

i had 3 weeks liquids

last two days have been able to eat anything as long as im limited in amounts and take my time. I love tunafish with (6)crackers and ate the sunkist to go ones, with no problems. Ive also had some gyro meat no problems, and ONE of my sons cheeze its. i honestly have had no problems, but i chew so that is like serious liquid in my mouth then i even press it and my tongue to the roof of my mouth to make sure that it was chewed enough. Im so scared to go thru what you just went thru. Im sorry it was bad, hopeflly next time it will be better.

Sounds like you may not be ready for solids just yet. I would give it another few days before attempting to eat something solid. Your upper stomach is still probably swollen and irritated from the surgery.

I was able to eat salads and raw veggies about 3 weeks after surgery. I still have issues with chicken breast,, i can eat it but i have to constantly remind myself to cut it in small pieces and chew CHEW CHEW !

GOOD LUCK TO YOU!!!!!!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Had a sleeve in 2017, lost over 100 pounds. Had a DS surgery this year (2025) for more sustainable weight loss. 🤞

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
