Hi Siren,

I got banded on July 11th, and happy to report that the pain does get better each day. I'd say by the 4th day I was already able to get up by myself. My friend had it done, and she said, it didn't hurt... LIAR!!!... it hurts... and I have staples, and stiches... so its hard to lay on my side still, and being a women, sitting is a bit uncomfortable for extended periods of time.. (bra wires)... but I'd say hang in there... a week in I feel really good... i'm down 9 lbs already, seems impossible!! I'm hoping by next week I'll be feeling closer to the 100% mark!!! The gas is normal, from what I've read, I was never a burper, but all of a sudden, I sound like a man. And PS, if you struggeling with the Protein Shakes like I am, I found one at VitaminShoppe that is TOLERABLE... still doesn't take fantastic, but I can get it down... Worldwide Pure Protein in Frosty chocolate. Be well fellow bander... and good luck!

Hello there. The first 3-4 days are rough. At least they were for me. I had my surgery last wednesday, and I'm still not at 100%. Just try to hang in there. I know what you're going through and it will get better!

I know what you mean about the pain. It can be excruciating but you need to walk...walk...walk!!! and drink...drink...drink!! I had taken 2 weeks off from work and was feeling fantastic the first day back. I was lucky and only had the glue...yea they glued me together again...LOL...just like Humpdey Dumpdey...LOL. I also used the GasX strips for the gas...helped alot!! It will all be worth it in the long run. I am now 8 weeks post op and have lost 38 lbs already. Just stick to the plan and it works!!! Good Luck and God Bless!!!!

Hi there. I was banded Tuesday, 7/15. I was more afraid of the gas pain that I'd heard so much about that I was determined to walk myself silly in the hospital. Let me tell you, I walked within 3 hours after surgery, & walked 5 times a day while in the hospital. The nurses were amazed & let me tell you, I have not had one problem w/any gas pain. Just a few burps here & there but the nurses credit it to all the walking. So please just walkas much as u can. It does hurt. I took my liquid Lortab, waied 30 minutes, walked about 15 min. & then rested for a couple hours. Just walk while your pain meds sre kicked in. I have 3 boxes of gas x strips ready & have not had to open any. I am def sore though from the staples. I have both staples & then steri strips on my port site. Good luck. I am on day 3 post op & it does get better. Just keep on the pain meds every 4 hours. dont wait till it gets bad. Anyway, walking works for me. & sip sip sip that Water. sugar free popsicles have saved me as well. I eat them one right after the other between water.. Goodluck & keep in touch.

Oh honey you have just had MAJOR surgery! Huge, major surgery. You are going to be very sore and tender and your new best friend will be Gas X (forget all the other one's, this is the only one that works for air and gasses trapped under the ribs and band area). Call your doctor and ask about the pain, make sure it's at the level that he expected you to be feeling. Then do some things to get more comfortable!

For example, get a wedge. A foam wedge, like from the stores that rent wheelchairs or other medical supplies. sleep on the wedge slanting downward at night (tall end towards your head). This will help you get up and down off the bed without that pulling feeling.

Use a pillow. Pull a pillow against you firmly when you must get up or change positions or go up/down stairs or get in a Jerky car. The lack of jerking motions the pillow helps with is very good for you.

sleep more, do less. Get magazines and cut out photos of clothes you WILL be able to wear again; focus on where you are going. The first five days are the hardest; of those, the first two or three really are the pits. But inch by inch, every day you will be doing better than the day before. If you really must go out of town that soon, plan to do a lot less on your trip and take your doctors' nurses' phone numbers with you!

Walk if you can stand it. Walk with the pillow if not. Try to find a way to move that is not jerking you around any. It will move the gas and trapped air out sooner, or so the nurses told me. I did not do much the first five days.

You can do this. Evey day it WILL get better and better. This is the toughest part right now -- two days post surgery is just the pitts, but it wil be over very soon!!!! I promise!! Be kind to yourself. You are on the road to a whole new life now, this is just a valley, soon you will be wondering how to navigate that new life instead!

In the meantime, rest! This will be over soon. Best of luck to you!

Hi everyone,

Surgery date 7/23 I'm a little freaked out reading about all the pain, but i'm still willing to go through it because I believe it will be worth it in the end. I'm planning on taking a week off I hope its enough because I can't be off to long. I didn't tell them about my plans for surgery I was just going to call in sick on Wednesday and tell them i'll be out for a week.

I am not saying I sat around in any pain whatsoever. It was just that I had never had surgery before so I was a little caught off guard by being as sore as I was, which sounds stupid but it's true. I was tender and I ached as I tried to get up from a horizontal position where the incision sites were. That was it though and I am a most serious pain weenie! I did not lay around and hurt from surgery. You are just sore and must baby yourself a bit. My doctor presribed pain medicine and I had it waiting and some nausea medication waiting here at home for me "just in case", but I never needed one drop of either one.

I would stay overnight in the hospital if you can just for comforts sake. Walk as soon as you are able to lessen the gasses allowed to stay inside the body. It's not terrible pain or no one would be doing it and you can see from the website none of us regret a moment of it!

Focus on your goals and get excited! Your new life is starting!!

I have not been banded yet, but I hear that the pain does not last long. Not much help to you now, I know. I am just now signing up to go through the process of banding. I'm definitely going to do it, but am afraid to go to Mexico. Good luck to you and let me hear of your progress! Take care now ~ Janet

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
