OMGOSH!!! Surgery really close!

Recommended Posts

Interesting development for me today.

Some of you know that I'm going through Kaiser and that the nearest hospital to me is finally getting lapband. They told me, not even a month ago, that they hoped to be up and running by the end of the year. I had it in my head that sometime this winter, I would be banded. The new surgeon is also doing laporiscopic (sp?) bypass and started that last month.

Okay, so this AM I get a message from the surgery department to call them back ASAP. Call them to find out that the new surgeon read through my file. Likes what he sees, thinks I'd be a great candidate for LB and wants me in to surgery on JULY 28TH OR 29TH!!!!! OH MY GOSH!!!!!

Well, guess what? I can't do it that week. DH just got home today after more than 3 weeks gone. He's on vacation and goes back to work on the 28th. He's a fireman and things in the state right now are bad and he can't take anymore time off. Days off have been canceled and if he didn't have vacation, he still wouldn't be home. We have a 2 year old and I have no family near-by to help and our friends can't take time off that fast. My mom can come down and but not in a week!

Soooo they are going to call me as soon as they get the schedule for August. I'll call them at the beginning and end of each week til they get the schedule and put me on it! So at this point, I'm all of a sudden at surgery time, sort of. Looks like I'm going to have it about 4-6 months sooner than I expected but I don't have a date yet!

I got off the phone and started crying. Partly for the missed opportunity of being able to have surgery 2 days after I turn 40 but mostly b/c all of sudden it's a reality! I knew I was approved but now it seems so real. I'm excited and scared to pieces all at the same time!

I haven't lost my 10% but the surgeon was happy with the 5+% that I've lost so far and I'll continue to work on that to get closer to the 10%. I also have some letters and lists to write in case something happens.

Anyway, this all happened this AM and I've been running around all day for other stuff so this is the first chance I've had to share. I will post when I have a surgery date. Looks like it'll be a Monday and sometime in August.

Well, that's it for now.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
