An embarrassing question.

One of my closest friends was banded almost a year ago. She's been preparing me for certain things to expect.

She told me that for her, it was difficult the first night to get on and off the toilet by herself.

I haven't had the guts to ask her yet, so I'm going to do it here....what about wiping your butt? Is it that difficult after surgery? :)

They say not to bend or twist. But don't most people bend and twist to clean themselves?:Banane03:

I guess its different for everyone but I had no particular difficulty. A few hours after surgery I was able to get out of bed by myself using the thingie above the bed to pull on and hospital toilets have rails anyway, you can use that to get up and down. I never had any problems wiping my butt either.

So you wont necessarily have any trouble, everyones experience is different.

But its a few little cuts, you get your mobility back very quickly. You havent had organs removed or been opened up from neck to pelvis, its really not that big a deal. You may not be running a marathon but you'll be fine to perform daily activities.

I had NO problem getting on and off the toilet or wiping myself. I was a 28/30--

hope this is not a problem for you either!

This shows how everyone is different. I had surgery July 2nd and I did have difficulty with getting up/down from the toilet as well as wiping. I wiped myself, but it was painful. I actually tried to keep motrin in me prior to gonig to bathroom, because that seemed to help. At times, it took me several minutes and some tears. My mom and husband helped me get up/down (same with in/out of the shower). The difficult part was this tremendous pain in my left abdomen area, which some people don't even experience. Everyone is so different though. Hopefully this will not be the case. I went to recover at my grandparents house and it was much better. My grandfather is in a wheelchair so he has the high toilets with a bar to help for support. MUCH BETTER! :)

Hope this helps! Good luck.

I had pain the first day with bending and twisting, but the next day I was fine. The first time it was pretty bad. My nurse suggested trying to stand up and then hunch over a little and that helped a whole bunch. Good luck! You'll do great! :)

It might depend on your size, and how you feel in general after surgery. I had no problems getting on or off the toilet, or wiping, and I slept in my bed the first night with no problems.

Hi. I'm 3 days post-op. I have not had any trouble getting up or down to the bathroom, a lot slower than usual, but can still move around. As far as wiping, had to stand up and hike a leg up on the potty seat to get into a wiping position, but i'm a big gal. BMI 67. Embarrassing but honest.

I was banded on july 7th, came home on the 8th and it was bussiness as usually caring for my three small children. I took the pain medication they sent my home with and was able to be up and around. We even went outside for a walk. I also had no problem going to the bathroom.

Using the bathroom was pretty uncomfortable for me the first couple days... actually it was the getting up part that hurt real bad for me.

I would get a bad pain in my left lower abdomen (near the port incision). I had to talk myself through getting up everytime. Once up, I was OK.

Never had a problem with wiping.

A little trick my nurse taught me was to take a deep breath prior to getting up/down and then letting it out as I got up/down. That helped a lot. I also kept an ice pack on my port incision for a couple of days. The pressure of the ice pack along with the cold was great. That was my woobie. I wouldn't go anywhere without for the first couple of days. Good luck on your journey. It only gets better from here.

I laughed not at the situation but becasue THAT IS EXACTLY how I had to do it because of the burning sensation I got trying to sit and wipe so I got up hiked that leg up and did what I had to do!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
