PCOS and looking at getting the Lap Band

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I am researching getting banded and I have started the process for the appropval...I have a few questions about expectations.

I was diagnosed 2 years ago with PCOS and have done EVERYTHING to lose weight. I am not one who has struggled their whole life with weight issues, but in the last 6 years I have gained this weight. I work out avidly 4-5 times a week, and I eat healthy. I was curious what I can expect in weight loss and how quickly when I get banded? I have about 85-90 pounds to lose, and I am currently at 37% BMI and have other health conditions.

What kind of success did you have, and how long has it taken you? I would love any feedback.

thanks

Shauna

Hello!

I also have PCOS, and I know what a struggle the weight loss has been for you! Let me tell you, girl, that I am only 1 week post-op and have already lost 25 lbs including the pre-op weight. 15 of those pounds were THIS WEEK! It's the most rediculous, crazy miracle I have ever experienced, and I didn't think that it was scientifically possible! Banding is the best thing that I have ever done for myelf, and I am only a week in! Take your time, research, and don't settle for any surgeon you don't love!

Goodluck, and if you have any questions, feel free to PM me!

i also had pcos before the lap band. i was banded in march of 2006 and lost 100 pounds. i now weigh 135! before i was having horrible menstrual problems, borderline diabetic, and i was taking metformin. now my blood sugar is normal, i don't take medicine anymore, and i'm not in danger of being diabetic. and my cycles are perfectly regular. it's one of the best decisions i've ever made! good luck!

I have decided to do banding too due to weight and pcos. I am 5'1 and 195 lbs. I don't eat alot and cannot loose weight. It takes me forveer to loose 5 pounds only to regain back. I just finished my pre-op testing-bariusm swallow and blood tests including 2 hr fasting glucose. My first consult is July 31 and I hope it's not too long before scheduled surgery. I have high blood pressure, depression, insulin resistance and I am only 30. I don't want to get full blown diabetes or heart problems when I am older. I want to feel better about my appearance as well.

I too have clinically high blood pressure, weight gain, and Insulin Resistance. My main reason for doing this is because I had post partum Congesitve Heart Failure at 25. I was in 1% of pregnancies this happens to,and I run huge risk of have heart problem later in life, and with my next pregnancy....but next time it may not correct itself. My heart is fine and normal now, but in may be permenant damage next time if I get pregnant and have all this extra weight. I am ready for a change, and ready to feel normal again!

My name is Sadie Lundry I am 19 years old and was diagnosed with pcos at the age of 13. I have struggled with my weight since. I now weight 240. I gain weight so fast. I have been documented twice to gain almost 25lbs within 2 weeks. How can I compete with that. I am looking into getting the lap band, I feel it is the only way to get ahead. I eat less than all these other small girls and exercise more. My parents are scared and they dont think I should not have any surgery to help me nor any drug. I feel so frusterated with my weight, I have dealt with Hair growth, but the weight makes me feel so sad. people look at me and think "why doesnt she eat less, or she should exercise more" I find that I will exercise and will lose a little but if I dont increse it every two weeks ill gain my weight back and then some. Is the lap band or any other surgery a good idea?

PCOS doesn't automatically cause weight gain. One of the women at my work has it and she's normal weight for her height. She's pregnant with her second bub, but her ovaries are full of cycsts, she was saying.

However, it is more common to be overweight with PCOS though.

Sadie: First of all, its up to you and you alone if you get the band. Your parents are concerned for you, which is their job, but they can't stop you from making the decision for yourself about getting the band or not. You need to do that, in consultation with your doctor.

As for what you are eating, are you aware that if you don't eat enough, your body goes into starvation? It slows your metabolism, which means you won't lose any and then when you do increase your food intake, it will store it all, incase of another famine! (this is what your body thinks is happening).

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
