Getting off birth control for surgery???

Recommended Posts

I went for my consultation today and the doctor told me I had to get off of birth control for a month before and a month after the surgery. Can anyone explain to me why this is ABSOLUTELY necessary and if anyone was told differnet???

If you are on a combined oral contraceptive pill maybe your doctor is concerned about risk for blood clots post operatively. Thats the only reason I can think of.

My endocrinologist also told me this, it's just to make everything regular before surgery and also being on the birth control pill increases your chance of blood clots, at first when she told me I was kind of annoyed - I've been skipping for as long as I can remember which I know isn't healthy but I figure it's one thing I won't have to worry about, now I don't mind that I'm going to have to go off it for a month before, she never said a month after so I assume it's ok after surgery but I know I"ll be taking the pill to skip like 2 days before surgery because I don't wanna be on the table and have something happen if you know what I mean (I'm paranoid like that lol)

Its just kind of frustrating because I've only been on Nuva Ring for a few months to regulate my periods b/c of PCOS and now I finally have regular periods instead of skipping for 6 months at a time and now I'll have to get off of it for 2 months and it'll completely mess it all up. I mean of course I'll do it to lessen my chances of getting blood clots and all.. but I wonder if there may be a different type of birth control that I could be on just for that time that wouldn't be a problem..

You should talk to your doctor about it. It may be the type of birth control, and not necessarily birth control itself. I'm on the pill and I didn't have to change anything. But it's always best to talk it out with your doctor.

I always thought it was the risk of blood clots too - I remember having to come off the pill to have my wisdom teeth out when I was about 20 so its not something new.

I was told by my doctor that I had to get off my birth control a month before and two months after! I was worried about this for many reasons (getting pregnant or having my body be thrown out of whack) but was told by my surgeon that it would be ok if I stayed on because I was at a low risk for blood clots. Well, my other doctor came and saw me in the hospital and reamed me out. She made me stop taking them that day and told me not to take them again for two months. But when I saw her a month later she told me I could continue with my pills. I too have PCOS so I know what's it like to be told you have to stop taking the one thing that has your body functioning the way it should. But remember it's only for a short time and before you know it everything will be back to normal! So hang in there, it won't be that bad I promise! Good luck!

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
