Question about restriction with different methods of fills

Recommended Posts

I keep hearing about how many people don’t have good restriction until their second, third or fourth fill, and there’s a couple things I don’t understand. Anyone who knows, can you help me out here?

1. Does the method of fill (drinking Water vs fluoroscopy) make a difference in whether a person feels restriction after their fill?

2. From what I understand, is the 'drinking water' method something like having you drink water as they fill you, until the water won’t pass through your band anymore, and then they take a little out? (I’m only 3½ wks out from surgery, I haven’t had a fill yet to know).

3. If that IS correct, then how would you not have restriction after the first fill?

4. If that’s NOT correct, can you please tell me how a fill is preformed with the ‘drinking water’ method?

Like I said, I’m only about 3½ wks out from surgery, but I’m just trying to kind of get an idea in my mind about how all this will work. My doctor typically does fills with the ‘drinking’ water method and I’m kindof trying to mentally prepare myself and understand.

Thank you so much. :cool2:

you are essentially correct on the 'drinking water method' and you should have an adequate fill after the first fill. however there are other factors at play. Your stomach shrinks after the fill and as you loose weight. I personally had a second fill four weeks after the first one and had adequate restriction on both. the first one just did not last as long as i thought.

I was banded May 15th and have had four fills, and I still can eat anything I want, except a big resturant-serving size meal. I have a 9 cc Realize band. My first fill was 3 cc's, 2nd fill was 2 cc's, 3rd fill was 1 cc, fourth fill was .6 cc's, so I have 6.6 cc's in the band.

I don't have to chew well, and I can swallow big Vitamins. My doctor has me sit with him for awhile after a fill, swallowing Water. As long as I can swallow nice sips of Water with no problem, I'm ok.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
