2 weeks post op w/ "tightness" in midsection & back??

Recommended Posts

I was banded on june 30th in Buffalo. ny and have been feeling pretty ok. Today I awoke with a tightness and discomfort that goes all the way around my midsection to my back. I notice it especially when I take a deep breath. It's ALMOST painful, but not quite there yet. I am concerned and freaking out. I was wondering if it was gas, but it doesn't feel anything like my previous bouts with gas. That was more like a sharp pain or jab...anyone else experience this? SHould I call my doc?

I am three days post - op and having the same sensation. It's around every 15-20 breaths or so. Weird and disturbing. If it gets worse I'm calling my doc--but in the meantime I sent my husband to get different gas medicine.

Hi,

I was also banded on June 30th and get that feeling occassionally. If you find out what it is, please post your answer. I just thought it was spasms due to increased activity. I don't mean exercising or anything strenuous, just moving around more. I didn't realize how much we use those stomach muscles for everyday activity until I had my surgery. I thought the back discomfort was due to added pressure on the back from compensating for decreased use of stomach muscles. When I have discomfort in my abdomen, I tend to tense up, causing more pressure on those muscles in the back.

I hope all this discomfort goes away soon for all of us.

Sincerely,

Stephanie

Hi:

The pain you described sounds like the pain I had with my gall stones. Gall stones are a common issue for someone who has a sudden weight loss. Hope it's not that. It was intermittent for me. The time that it woke me up and lasted for three hours was when I called the doctor. They did an ultrasound and found alot of small gall stones in there.

I hope you feel better soon.

Sue

I think there is a very good chance this is gas pain but it couldn't hurt to call your Dr and ask. I was told the surgeon fills your body cavity with gas during the procedure. There is no way to get rid of it other then absorb it into your body, its not regular gas we can pass. Walking is the only cure, oh and a heat pad or having somebody pound on your back (that seemed to really help me). My pain was mostly in my shoulder. However I did have a hard time taking in deep breaths when it was really bad and it seemed to hurt right under one of my lungs.

Good luck, hope it gets better soon.

It's horrible when I yawn, which I keep having to do because I'm breathing so shallow to try and avoid the pain! It's in my left lung, and I,too am feeling so claustrphobic! I hope it's not a pulmonary embolism or anything!

Please go to the doctor to put your mind at ease. You don't need to feel lousy and be worrying. That's what you pay them for. Please go to your doctor and let us know how you make out.

Please.....please.....I'm worrying about you.

Sue

I was banded on July 2 and I had a lot of chest pain /pressure/discomfort from the time I was in the recovery room. I even told the recovery nurse that I felt like a small child was sitting on my chest. They did an EKG after surgery and it was fine. This same problem persisted once I went home. I got VERY concerned because I actually felt like I was going to have a heart attack! I went to the ER about 6 days post-op, and I let the doctor know that I just had the lapband surgery. They did another EKG, and the heart was fine. They said that the gas is still trapped in body and it will take a while to release it all. (I hear that people burp a lot after the surgery, but I still have not burped since surgery, so I think I just had to wait until gas was gone). I am 15 days post-op and feel great! No more gas, no more chest pain! I promise you all that it does get better. Don't hesitate to see a doctor if it persists. This is only my experience.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
