Hello -- I'm new!

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone! I've decided to have the lap band surgery probably in October or November of this year -- Statesville, NC. I have found out that my health insurance will pay 90% of the cost. I've been "dieting" my way up to 267 lbs and I'm finally fed up. This is it.

I've already been to an information session and everything....this is the right thing for me to do. I just wanted to say "hello" and sort of introduce myself.

I'm 40 years old. I have 2 kids -- 19 and 9 and I've been dating a wonderful (supportive) guy for 1 1/2 years now.

I want to lose the weight for me. I'm tired of being tired....if that makes any sense? :-)

I look forward to hearing any feedback you may can share with me to sort of ease my nervousness about all this.

Hi! I just wanted to send you a note to welcome you, and congratulate you on your decision to be banded! I joined about a month after I had my lap-band surgery, and this site has certainly been a godsend!

I was banded April 14, 2008 and have lost 52lbs total and have gone from a size 54 waist to a 48 waist. Some people are more successful, some less; it all depends on your dedication and your physical makeup (your genes if you will). Don't ever get discouraged if things don't go as you thought they would, my best advice is to communicate with your surgeon and make friends on here to answer questions as you go.

I have worked in a hospital for the last 8 years as a Cardiac Monitor Tech; and I can assure you that with this procedure there is very little (nearly nothing) to be anxious about. Most patients are ready to bounce back in about 4 days after surgery and get on with their life. When I had mine, I scheduled 9 days off, and was going stir crazy by the 5th day! There are rarely any complications, and if you do everything as instructed, there shouldn't be any complications. The other bonus to this type of surgery is that it is completely reversible!! So if you suffer anything unusual, it can be reversed. At my hospital there have been no mortalities, and less than 1% in complications (and those were from individuals who did not strictly follow the program).

I hope I have made you feel better and more at ease, feel free to message me and ask any specific questions you might have; I'd be more than happy to answer or help you find the answer.

Good Luck!

Jason

Hi, this is my first post. I am starting on my path of getting the lap band. I have had my first doctor appointment with Dr. Enochs. Now on the journey of getting everything ready for insurance approval and testing done. I am excited and afraid of the whole process.

I live in Cary and I have two kids. My son is 23 and my daughter is 13. I have been married for 24 years. My husband and kids are very supportive of my choice.

I look forward to all the support I will get here too. The posts are so supportive and encouraging.

I recently have looked for a surgeon to do my surgery. I work at REX and I've heard good things from the nurses. From what I hear Dr. Moran is not very personable. Dr. Enochs is much more then Dr. Moran. The OR manager I work with is going to do some investigating and find out more information.

Previously, I was looking into Dr. Kenneth Mitchell Jr. in Pinehurst. However I learned that his mortality rate is 4% and that kind of freaks me out.

I plan on attending the seminar next month.

Anyone who has any thoughts specifially on Dr. Enochs, let me know!

:)

I can understand that getting tired of being tired. Since my lapband, I have found my energy level has defintily increased. I can walk a flight of stairs without feeling like I am going to stop breathing or have a hear attack. I admit my weight loss has been a slow process, about 70 to 75 pounds in two years. I am almost below the 200 pound on scale, would like to lose 40 more pounds once I hit that mark. Hope all goes well in your decision with the lap band, lapband was the right decision for me, but everyone has to come to that confirmation themselves. Good luck and welcome!

Vickie

Just wanted to say Hello to everyone! Hope your journey's are going well or the pre-op process is going even better for you! The band has been a great tool for me and I am very happy to have had over 3 yrs ago. There are so many more band doctors now then when I started.

Good Luck on your process and journey! If anyone is ever in the Charlotte area there are about 10 - 20 of us that get together on a monthly (sometimes more because we have so much fun together) basis. Our next support group meeting is Sept 13th it's held at Presbyterian Hospital.

Again good luck!!!!!

I have had my initial appointment with Dr. Enochs. I've just had a bit of a communication problem with the insurance specialist. The psych was really supportive, the dietitian was efficient. After a month, I called to find out that much of the information that needed to be gotten from other resources had not been done, i.e. labs from my doctor and hospital records. I just had the feeling that she was not going to be very helpful. JMO

Thanks everyone!

Turns out I really had nothing to be worried about. Everything with my surgery went wonderfully!! I'm doing great and have lost 33.5 lbs so far. My surgery was Oct. 6 at Davis Hospital in Statesville. I've been to my first support group meeting there and it was very helpful. I've also had my first fill and BOY did things change for me after that! For the good...but wow, what a difference in the amount of food I can eat.:huh2:

I look forward to getting to know all of you!

Great results, Cindy! I was banded on Dec 4th, so I am still in the healing stage. Feeling great, but I can tell I am not very restricted. I am eating exactly what the doctor says and have lost about 16 pounds. I am looking forward to my first "fill" in January. I also need to start doing some serious exercise. Are you exercising?

Good luck!! Keep in touch!

P.S. I'm in Raleigh!

No...I haven't started an excercise program, yet. But I need to! I keep letting things get in my way...the rush of the Holiday season, being busy with housework when I get home from work, etc...

I have a great place to walk at work. My plan is to eat my lunch then go out in the warehouse and walk.

Best of luck to you!

Cindy

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
