New & Considering Lap Band (anyone in Detroit?)

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone. I'm not really sure what to post, just wanted to make an intro. I'm a 21 year old guy, considering getting the lap band. I've been really overweight ever since I was very young. I've tried losing weight so many times but just can't do it. The lap band sounds like exactly what I need.

I'm just to a point where I don't feel like I can keep going on like this anymore. I feel like I've missed out on so much of my life and I don't want to miss out on any more of it. Of course I'm a little scared of the lap band, but it's something I know I need to do. I'm ready.

Did anyone here have theirs done at Harper University Hospital in Detroit? This seems to be the right place for me, given that I'm only a few hours away and the cost is really good compared to everywhere else. I'd just like to reassure both myself and my mom that this is the right decision and the right place to do it.

I'm not sure about your area but wanted to assure you, don't hesitate to get the band and don't procrastinate. It has changed my life. I would have given anything to be able to have this opportunity at your age. It is totally safe and easy to lose when it is adjusted correctly. And if anything ever goes wrong you can have it removed and your body is still intact! I have lost 100 lbs and even though I need a revision due to a slight slip, my life is not threatened and everything inside me is still intact. Good luck!

Thanks for your reply. It's encouraging to hear from people who have actually had this done! I know it'll be tough changing my life and eating habits, but I've just gotta remember that it'll be totally worth it.

I do kinda have this fear that I'm gonna go in and not wake up. I know that's ridiculous because the risks are so low, but it's still tough. I think my mom probably fears that even more than I do. Although I know she's relieved I'm not talking about going to Mexico to have it done anymore.

I had my surgery in Port Huron. They have a lap band center there and were so very good at educating and briefing before the surgery, and afterwards. Since My Health Care paid for it, I don't know about the cost. I am very happy I had it done, and wish I could have done this earlier. I would check to make sure Harper has a good education center for the lapband. The assistance/follow up/dietician support would make a big difference after the surgery.

Hi Libguy2753,

I too am thinking of getting the procedure done at Harper. I'm actually going to attend a 2 hour informational session today that I'm really excited about. However, I'm still researching surgeons. I was hoping you would share your story about the surgery, surgeon and post op. It would really help to get more information from someone local.

Thanks so much!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
