Don't look down on us because we are fat!

Recommended Posts

I didnt know what Title to use for this Thred. For all you newbies that question the band look at this... Everyday living Fat is hard, people look down on us, judge us. They think we are Lazy, Stupid.. Who knows what else. We are discriminated against and judged. I look at the Thred "what do you do for a living" and all I can say is WOW!! being Fat doesnt make you lazy or stupid! Why people see us that way I dont know. I was at class one day and some old man.. over 65 (in the same class as me age 27 at the time) ask me if I was disabled. Why because Im fat? He was discriminating agaist my weight. Shouldnt I have the same right to do it against his age. I dont know where im getting with this.. I just know that no matter how big you are WE are all are important. WOW again to the stay at home moms, to the teachers, to the nurses and lpns, to the engineers, and consultants, to the buisness owners. We dont stop our lives because we are Fat... We achive so much more. And I wish others on the street, in School, at work.. could see it, and know that WE are just as good as anyone else out there. Our weight isnt holding us down!

Thanks for listening!

You are so right Trish..my sister gets so angry with the way people treat me...as if I am below them and sometimes as if I'm not even there. It's amazing how the bigger we are, the more invisible we become to the world. Sad-it also their loss as I know (as we all know) many extremely intelligent, ambitious, beautiful people who just happen to be fat.

That isnt right, who a person is and what they are capable of doing, has nothing to do with their size. Everyone needs love, big people, little people, fat people, and skinny people. Dont think not one time people only talk or judge fat/large/heavy/big boned people, they pick on skinny people also. Im skinny, I only weigh 110 lbs. I know alot of times people be like "Ohhh you're so skinny, or when are you going to gain weight". I dont let that get me down, cause I too wish I was a lil' bit thicker. I jus push it all to the side, and ignore it. Look on the bright side, and be happy with what GOD gave you. People are going to talk noise regardless.

Tricia, maybe each one of us can make a difference in our various little corners. We know what it's like, "been there, done that". Hopefully our compassion and understanding can influence others around us. I recently sat next to a very overweight lady on an airplane. She looked so stressed when I squeezed past her. But we had a wonderful visit throughout our flight. She was so interesting, had a beautiful french accent, and was just a lovely person.

In all honesty, I think that a lot of us work harder than the average person. We know what people think of us, and so we seek to exceed the norm and prove that not only can I do as much work as the average person, but I can do more, and make it better! This isn't true for all bigger people of course, but I think more so than not. I think (based on nothing but opinion) that it's probably a very small percentage of fat people that fit the lazy stereo type.

Now don't get me wrong, I'm LAZY when it comes to cleaning my house and working out and things like that, but at work? I kick butt!! (That's also not to say that there aren't average or skinny people out there that don't do the same, but I think you know what i'm getting at.)

Anyhow, that just struck me when I read your post, and thought that I'd share. ;)

I think a lot of it too is how we feel in our own skin. I know on my confident days, I either don't care or people don't treat me like that. When I'm really depressed about my weight or feeling ugly it happens more.

Also, it's a lot harder for me to take when it comes from my family. I'd put in for a promotion job at work last year and it was a close race and I didn't get it. Not because of appearance, it was other factors.

My OWN parents were like "you didn't get that job because you are so fat". MY OWN PARENTS!!!!!

So when the person that got the job quit in less than a year and management admitted it should have been my job all along and I finally got promoted, it was hard not to call up my parents and say "see, looks like I was JUST FAT ENOUGH to get the job!!!'

Makes me crazy. But again, if I walk with my head up, shoulders back and proud, then people don't talk down to me. I try to remember that, especially on the "dark" days.

Amen to what you said Trish! I think that sometimes people are taken back a bit when they realize that I won't put up with their crap! (aka- my spicey personality!)

I honestly can't wait for my doctor's office to call me back and say that I can come in and talk to the doctor again. I'll tell them in as polite of a way as I know how, that I don't need their referral now. :) Kinda makes me wonder if I'm being put off by (my old doctor too) and now this one because of my weight? HHHHMMMM

If feels so good to take control of that situation and have the last laugh. Haaaa Haaaaa!!!!!

What a great thread!

How true is this, we all are successful and have many different occupations, we are all intelligent, just because we are obese does not make us stupid

So true!! I am new to this board, but not to those looks, comments, etc. What people don't know is that I have struggled with weight my whole life (though in high school wore a size 10 and thought I was HUGE...now I wish!). They also don't know how I walk on my treadmill 3-4 times a week, watch what I eat--eating healthier is much easier how that my kids eat "real" food now--chase my almost 3-year-old twins all day and stay up at night working from home (I am a single mom)!!

It is so frustrating!! I am so happy to have found this board!! smile.gif

As much as i hate the way other people judge me... i hate the way i judge myself for being overweight more. If i was more comfortable in my own skin i think things would be different..

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
