I was told nothing to eat or drink after midnight the night before my surgery. I was also on a pre-op diet for two weeks prior to surgery. Two Protein Shakes a day and for dinner I could have fish or chicken and one green veggie. Are you on a pre-op diet?

They told me i didnt need a pre-op diet... and i will be on liquids for a week after surgery but my stomach will be smaller so i will be less hungry right??? I get to move up to different foods the 2nd week... like yogurt, oatmeal and baby food... and week 3-4 i get normal food but it has to be blended in the Magic Bullet.... Are you saying your hungry after surgery?? I thought i read the total opposite??

It amazes me how different each doctor is. My doctor explained that the pre-op diet is not so much for you to lose weight before surgery but to shrink your liver. The liver gets in the way when they are placing the band and if they knick it...it can be bad news. Most people who are over weight have what they call a "fatty liver'...the pre-op diet will shrink it and reduce your chance of it getting in the way and getting damaged.

When the band is placed it is normally put in EMPTY. For the first week you may not be hungry cause you will have some swelling but when that goes down you will be hungry because the band is empty and you have no restriction. Did you go to any WLS seminars? I would highly recommend it...they are almost always free and very informative.

I was on liquids for two weeks after surgery and then was able to move up to mushy foods but it was tough. Had to be very careful or they would make me sick and vomit. I would say the first four weeks are tough, the liquid stage is not always fun, especially when you want real food. But everyone some how gets thru it....you will too.

wow, Im surprised. Its hard to know how you stack up against others. I had clear liquids for 3 days and my doctor said I could try mushy foods and see how I tolerated them. I snuck one small teaspoon of unsweetened applesauce the end of 2 days post op and it tasted divine. I came out of surgery asking when is dinner. (I was in a hospital). Im 5 days post op and eating mushy food, tried 1/2 packet of oatmeal tonight. Had the Beans from a taco platter for lunch, had to give the rest of the platter to my family. Melted some laughing cow cheese into the beans because its super soft anyway.

I do need to work on getting enough Protein in now though. Im forcing down a can of protein Boost tonight. Drinking Water with protein, but still not getting enough. Also not losing weight yet. I think a lot of this is to help you lose some weight fast. I could eat pretty much anything from day 1 if they would let me, but know I cant. I havent tried any meat yet though.

I wonder why you had trouble tolerating mushy food? Maybe from so long on liquids?

My surgeon advised of having a light dinner the night before surgery, nothing after midnight, and if needed, up to 6oz of clear liquids up to two hours prior to surgery.

Post-op requires 3 days of clear liquids once I come home, 1-2 weeks of 'mushies' & clear liquids, then progress into light meals such as fish or chicken & soft veggies.

I have been under the impression that right after surgery my portion size will decrease drastically because I will feel full much faster. Guess it depends on the person, and how well the surgeons directions are followed.

Good Luck!

I was just in no way ready for food yet. I had a very painful recovery and took everything very slowly. My doc recommends the two weeks of liquids so your stomach doesn't have to work on digesting so much while it is healing. It all made sense to me. I went from clear liquids to then full liquids which could include pudding and Jello.< /p>

I just got my instructions yesterday and my Doctor says clear liquid diet the day before surgery plus 2 ounces of Milk of Magnesia around noon. I can't imagine them saying you can have a regular dinner the evening before surgery - it's amazing how they all differ.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
