OMG!!! I just have to rant about this!

Recommended Posts

I was just sitting in my clinic's waiting room, because I needed a small defill.

There were three four other women there, one who was dominating the conversation. They were talking about vomiting and being too tight. The one one had been talking nonstop said that she had struggled with eating disorders. They were saying that the clinic should have an eating disorder psychologist etc... blah blah blah. Then she said that she can only eat 1 or 2 bites of food and she vomits etc. When I suggested she neeed a defill, she said "maybe, but one out of every 10 days I can eat what I like. Yesterday I ate 21 ice cream bars". I nearly fell off my chair! Who the %&*# told her to eat 21 icce cream bars!!!

I told her that this clinic was to give you a tool for your weight loss and maintenance and not to fix your head! I told her I am in therapy to do with the non physical issues around my weight. She said she has been seeing an eating disorder specialist for years!!! (Obviously not the right one). She also said that she was afraid she would starve if she did not eat those 21 ice cream bars, because she had not been able to eat the other nine days. Hello????? What about Protein, fruits & vegetables?

I do not "diet", but I am not a moron and know that 21 ice cream bars is not healthy!!! Does that woman have no common sense??!!! Fortunately, the nurse called me in at that point because I was ready to go over there and smack her!!!

Thanks goodness for this rant and raves area. Had to get that off my chest. Just goes to show you there is no minimun IQ required for this surgery.:smile2:

With all the requirements some clinics/insurance companies in order to qualify people for surgery, perhaps the only requirement really needed is common sense.

that just baffles me that people think that. i dont know a non-banded person that could just sit there and eat 21 ice cream bars... even when i was at my pre-surgery weight i dont think i could have done that!!

I probably coulda....and I probably could now after the band. I'd be sick as heck, but I think I could do it.

I just don't want to. That's what I don't get. What do these people WANT? The ice cream? or to be thin?

Why did they even get surgery? Really? My shrink asked me if I knew and understood what was coming. I nodded, YEAH, YEAH, I GET IT - Now give me my band.

But, despite blowing him off:

-I did KNOW what I was getting into.

-I did follow the post-op instructions.

-I do "listen" to my band - sometimes I argue, but a good PB stops me in my tracks...

21? Even though I know that gluttony is in me, it's shameful and appalling.

And, HELLO!!!! I'd never admit that in public! Geesh...some people have no pride.

good lord, 21?! that's crazy, banded or not!

two weeks ago in my surgeon's waiting room I met a woman who boasted that she could (and regularly does) drink a 6-pack of beer in a sitting. nice!

Egads band or no band that is extreeme. That woman didnt need a band she needs her jaws wired shut. OH bleh no that wouldnt work, shes the type who would then live on milkshakes through straws and whine she hasnt lost anything.

I always assumed the pre op psych visit was meant to catch people like that?!? so why was she allowed to have the surgery to start with? Musta been a psych that didnt their job very well or something. And if shes in ongoing counceling it sure aint working. unless they have gotten her down to 21 ice bars or something. Thats mind boggling. Thats like 3 boxes of ice cream bars.

But see, for someone to sit there and blab on about it like that, I suspect its not a true eating disorder, more a personality disorder. I listened to similar in the waiting room a few months back, these two ladies came in, both pretty obese, both had gained and were talking about it. "I'm going to give that doctor a piece of my mind" said one. "oh, yes, I can eat ANYTHING too, I ate a whole big mac meal the other day". On and on it went. Its pathetic. That's not an eating disorder, its a refusal to step up to the plate and do your bit to make the band work! Its obvious they both just wanted something to do all the work for them, and they had this "I bought a faulty item" mentality where it wasnt working and they were going to darn well complain about it.

That's so different to true anorexia, bulimia or compulsive overeating. In fact I think if you really suffered those first and foremost you would probably know that you had a lot of sorting to do before you were banded, or at the very least you would have informed your surgeon and sought outside assistance with it. You wouldnt be bitching about it in someone's waiting room.

21 ice cream bars is just bloody stupid and she deserves what she gets for that quite frankly. Sooner or later you have to grow up and accept that you wont get the outcome you desire without putting the work in.

I just have to say WELL SAID Jacqui. Many people do need to grow up and take responsibility for their own actions. Blaming the doctors (or making other excuses) isn't going to get anyone anywhere. They need to learn the words work and self-control, unless a true eating disorder (like you mentioned) is present, and these can be helped as well.

21 ice cream bars really boggle my mind! I would think she would have become sick of them, say, after ten or so???? oy.

its very sad that some people, even given this powerful tool, cant move forward. it also sucks that she (21 bars) has to be so vocal. why should we have to hear about her psych issues.

do you think she was being honest? i mean, 21 bars? even my husband, who can really put ice cream away, doenst eat many in a sitting. sure, he can polish off six or seven, whatever is in a single box, but 21? that just blows my mind!

and how do you do that without getting gut splitting ill? just thinking about trying to eat that much makes me sick!

good lord, i know i have my demons i wrestle with and i have bad days, but wow, she has issues!

Yeah 21 bars is really extreme. I'd be puking my guts out after maybe 5 or 6...and I mean pre-band!

I really don't think a lapband is gonna help someone like that. Wonder if she told her doctor that she downed that many....

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
