Hello all,

My name is Melissa and I am scheduled to be banded the 15th. Yes tomorrow. Yeah me. Anyway I was just reading some of the new post today on this board and I came across one that shook me a little. Needless to say it caused me to come running (well not running more like my normal slow stroll). The post was on Hair loss. Several women reported that they have lost a third of there hair since being banded. I know the make up is a little different for us so I wanted to see if any of ya'll had come across this since being banded. Some women even said it was coming out in clumps.:smile2:

I have not been banded yet, but saw the same post about a week or so ago, so I brought it up @ my last nutrionist appointment. She said it is normal, but not to expect alot as long as you are getting in your Protein and taking the vitamins/multi Vitamins that are recommended by your doctor. Good Luck tomorrow.

Hi...I was banded on May 16th and I haven't seen a signifigant loss in my hair. I am currently growing out my relaxer and haven't had one in 7 months, and my hair is as shiny and healthy as ever. I will say that I haven't had the extreme weight loss that some women have had...I just went for my second fill and I'm down a total of 32lbs since I started the process in May. If you feel like your hair is beginning to shed, eat more protien and take a Biotin supplement to help your hair stay strong. Also, I did notice that after the anestesia (sp?) my scalp was extremely dry for like 2weeks, but that could just be my sensitive skin. Hope this helps...and good luck tomorrow!

Tomorrow is by band day too!!! like everyone else said i am not going to worry about the hair loss issue too much - it'll grow back.

Jemo! Wow 32 pounds is great. Was that after the surgery or did that include the preop diet?

I was banded in May...my hair sheds anyway but I haven't noticed any difference. My nutritionist said the Hair loss is due to lack of Protein. I have been told I need to intake 40-60 grams daily.

The reason is that Protein are the building blocks of all your body's cells and they reproduce in different intervals. The fastest reproducing cells requiring the most protein are your hair follicles. That's why the 1st sign of protein deficency is hair loss. If you don't get enough protein over a period of time, you will experience great hair loss along with break down of muscle tissue because muscles are built of a great deal of protein.

I wouldn't worry too much if you are eating what you should, and if you're still short stick in a protein shake! :-)

I only lost 6lbs before my surgery....so everything has been after the surgery. The only exercise I really do is walking...but I guess its working. I just started using the online calorie counter in my signature about 3 weeks ago, but it has really helped.

I am not a colored woman, but I am definately losing hair. I have been watching my Protein so closely. I mean I am sure I don't always get enough, but I try. I worry about it and feel like it is so noticeable, but no one else does. My doctor said it usually fixes itself in a few months. Hope you are all doing better with it than I am.

My diet has been tough because I am not yet at restriction. The first few days after surgery I hardly wanted to drink Water let alone Protein Shakes. I was so excited when I got to mushies and I got to eat 2 days of regular food before my 1st fill. After fills I have 2 days of liquids, 2 days of mushies, then back to regular food. Usually I make sure to get eggs and maybe turkey bacon (crispy) for Breakfast, some type of grilled chicken for lunch, and fish or lean beef for dinner. I didn't know beef had the most Protein out of meat, but it's hard to get good lean beef. I don't snack much, or I try not to, but I bought 100 calorie Snacks if I do snack and that's 1 or 2 times at the most per day. I try to limit myself to 1200 calories but that's hard with no restriction. I have my 2nd fill this Friday.

I try to average 400 calories per meal, and if I know I will eat a little more maybe for lunch, then I will eat a much lighter breakfast. Salads are good too with fat free Italian dressing. Unfortunately Caesar salads are high in calories and fat I think but it's still better than a burger. :-) Check the boards under nutrition and you will see a lot of recipes and ideas. And eat a lot of fruit too, and crystal light or lowfat milk for drinks but mostly water. I didn't realize how many calories I used to take in drinking smoothies, slushies, soda, etc.

I got banded in Dec. 2007 and I haven't noticed any differece. I am growing out my hair naturally and I wash it everyday. My hair is very healthy and has grown out very long but I think that is because I haven't had a relaxer in 18 months. I eat my Protein first and then vegetables and if I'm still hungry I will eat carbs. I spoke to my doctor about this and he said very few of his patients complain about Hair loss. I hear that if one does experience hair loss then Biotin will help. Good luck!!!!!!!!!

Thank you all for the info. I think I will have my daughter pick me up some Biotin pills and maybe a bag and 1/2 of hair just to be pro-active! LOL. Thanks again and please keep me in your prayers as today is my special day.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
