Recovery more than I expectd.

Recommended Posts

:wub:I would like to say "Hello" since I just joined the Forum, encouraged by my 2 fantastic daughters who were real concerned about their mom this last week. I was banded on 7/2/08 Wed. and was told I would be fine to go back to work on Monday. On Sunday I became very nauseous and could not get up without tremendous discomfort in my stomach and my mouth flooded with hot Water that I could only spit out because I knew I would throw up if I tried to swallow it. It was an awful day. Hot Soup would soothe for a few minutes, if I kept it down and my stomach hurt deep.

Long story short, they discovered I was having a major problem with reflux. My stomach hurt when it was empty and threatened to throw up when there were liquids taken in. Doctor prescribed Previcid and Caradate and I felt pretty good on Tues. Went to work on Wednesday but was sick all day. When I got home, I threw up, for the first time. Friday, Xrays were taken and found that it was extreme reflux and some swelling but band was fine.

Now I'm in my 2nd weekend. Still just taking in liquids but feeling more like myself. Port area is still sore but I am now excited. I write this to say that reflux can be a problem, especially if you are on the shorter side. I just wish I would have had the medicine before it got too far away from me. When I felt what seemed like nervous indigestion, I ignored it and it only got worse...so be prepared. It will make recovery better if you're aware before it happens. By the way, my 2 week pre surgery diet to this point 11 days post surgery, I have lost 18 pounds. :(

Ouch, I'm so sorry to hear about your reflux.... it sounds miserable. Hopefully now with the medicine you are back on the right track. And congratulations on your weight loss!

I'm short too..... 5'1".... and I've been fortunate so far to have avoided reflux or any problems like that, although I do burp a lot (indiscreetly and in a very lady-like manner, of course).

Thank you so much for your reply. This is the first blog I have ever participated in...but everything seems new now. I'm doing great now and the "burping" is more of an extreme pressure feeling below my throat. If I coulld have "burped", even ladylike, I think it would have helped. Thanks again!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
