Recommended Posts

hey there everyone, got banded on 6/26/08. got REALLY sick. my bowels backed up inside and caused an infection. saw dr. this last mon (7th) and she sent me for emergency cat-scan to see if i had an abcess, no abcess but huge pocket of air caught in my back and still LOTS of pain in my abdomin. lost 10 lbs in 12 days. has anyone else experienced as much pain as i have gone through. no fill for me until 6-8 weeks. i have also had the FULL feeling but just because i ate and drank together but i was also super dehydrated. just wondered how quickly others got well, or if anyone got sick like i did. i hope this pain goes away soon, almost 4 weeks out from surgery and still hurting. she but me on anti-biotics just in case.

Hi,

I was banded 2/28 and my husband 3/6. We never had a Constipation issue till then. I cleaned myself out before the surgery but went 10 days!! before I went again. I took milk of mag (YUCK!) on day 7 and 8 and went on day 10. After having to go through this a couple of times I can't stand MOM anymore. I switched to Benefiber chewable tables and am doing great. My pain and bloat issues was in the end usually from constipation. I take a variable amount of Benefiber depending on how much actual Fiber I take in in a day or if I remembered to take it the last couple of days. You've got to remember they tell you to eat the Protein first and then go on down the line of your food. Poor little Fiber that moves everything can't always get eaten. I also found that pushing myself to get my fluids (water or crystal lite) helped a lot. Of course my husband likes coffee so he just drinks that, I can't stand it though. We walk 6 days a week as well. I hope some of this helps you. It will get better.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
