Restriction right after surgery

Recommended Posts

When I got home from the surgery center 14 days ago I could definitely feel restriction - could only sip broths, etc. Now after 14 days I can swallow my big Vitamins, eat low-fat food I want as long as I chew properly - I mean for Protein I have been eating boiled eggs a lot but do not feel that restriction I really liked feeling right after surgery - I have convinced myself that my band has slipped or pouch expanded or whatever even though the doctor says usually if it has slipped you can't swallow anything at all. Does anyone know why the band felt tighter right after surgery and not now - is there swelling involved right after that may not be there now? I also get the hiccups constantly but was told that is normal also. Thanks!

The reason why you felt restriction right after surgery is because your stomach swelled and now that it is now swollen any more the restriction is gone until you get a fill. So don't worry you didn't do anything wrong.

Swelling, that is why you felt more right after surgery. Im in the same boat. I was banded on the 27th. I can also feel like i can eat anything with no problem.. Unfortunately im on full liquids still for another week, but i have yogurt, and Jello etc with no problem. I also think i could eat alot more. I don't think its a slip unless you have seriously abused your doctors advice, mine gave me 3 weeks of liquids but most only do 1 week then solids?? AS far as ive been able to tell from other posts. I also get the hiccups alot LOL.. I hope you have a doc. appt soon so you will know for sure. I go back on the 29th. Good luck!!

I've gone from 2 oz of full liquids, to 4, to nearly 8 at a time, in the week since I've been banded. I limit though how much I'm getting - even if I could have more. When I think I'm hungry and it isn't time for a meal, I walk the dogs.

One week full liquids, now 2 weeks of mushies, no more than 1/2 cup at each meal. 3 meals a day.

Loving my new band! What a breeze this has been.

chocolate cake was served at a meeting last night. Someone asked if I wanted some, I said no thanks - and meant it! Looked like diabetes on a plate to me and I'd sooner drunk swamp Water.

The restriction was because you were swollen after surgery and now the swelling has subsided. You want feel any restriction until you get a fill. It may take several fills before you feel you're where you need to be. My surgery was March 20th (started with 3cc) and I've had 5 fills. The first four, the doc put 1cc and last week he put .5 cc. I can really feel the restrictions now because I lost 3 pounds last week. It may take you you several fills, also.

If you're not frustrated enough, here's another bit of news-

my doctor told me that, in addition to your body fat, your stomach itself will be "losing weight" (the fat that is marbled in your stomach will be reducing as well). So that causes the band to loosen up as well as the swelling going down! Hang in there. The fills will help get your restriction where you want it.

Exactly... it's just because the swelling went down. You'll have to wait for your first fill to get that great restriction again! So many people here have such a problem from the time the swelling goes down, to their first fill! I'm sure hunger returns with a vengence! Don't worry, though, there's nothing wrong at all!

Lol! Good for you! I'm on day 4, and I hope I have that restraint!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
