I know when I miss a couple meals I turn into a real #@tch. Now I don't know how in the heck you people made it on a liquid diet for 2 weeks thank heaven's that I only have to go 2 days on a liquid diet...

But what about after the surgery did you go through withdrawals?

Did you turn angry what what happened tell me tell me please

I did OK after the surgery, but every time I get a fill, which my doctor requires 48 hours of liquids, I warn the family. I'm hell on wheels and sometimes can't stand myself. LOL It goes away the second I eat my first real meal. :-D

Hi Jill,

I know how you feel and that's how I was too. I'm on the preop diet right now but surprisingly it hasn't been so bad. The second day was hard because I had to cook for the family for the first time on my diet and I was kinda bitter not being able to eat "real" food. 2 days ago was probably my worst because I hadn't had enough slimfasts during the day and by the time 6 pm rolled around I was weak from hunger *i cheated - and would rather not say what I ate. otherwise it's been tolerable. I'm taking it one day at a time and feel it would be somewhat daunting to focus on the diet limitations in the nearer future. We really will have to relearn everything to do with eating but it's worth it.

I am on the pre-op diet right now, and I don't know how my family has kept from killing me. Sometimes I wish they would. Today is day 6 of my full liquid diet. I have read what others can eat on their pre-op diet, and it makes me wonder why my Dr. is so mean. LOL. Here is my diet. Word for word.

5 cans of slim fast Low carb

May have sugar-free popsicles and sugar-free Jello

may have liquid that is calorie free

Low calorie buillon (occasionally)

That is it, that is all.....I feel my stomach eating itself!!!

It's taking everything in me to keep my mouth shut right now about those dumb liquid diets..

But anyway, I will try to answer your question.. of course you are going to be cranky when your brain needs fuel and you aren't providing it. It will be better after the surgery.. especially for the first week you will be too swollen to even want to eat or be hungry.. I was just in a daze that whole week and was fine drinking Isopure and broth.. but after two weeks and before restriction is where it's tough. But, it will soon become a thing of the past and you'll be fine. Good luck.

I guess that is the hardest part. With NO food it is hard to have energy. I know that I have not been nice, and I sort of feel bad for that. But today is day 6 of the wonderful liquid diet.... If I can do this, I know I can do anything.

happy days:

The pre and post surgical liquid diets were the hardest part. It helped for me to think of making my surgery safer by sticking to all liquids pre-op. However, post-op I turned into a b!tch. It's short term and I got past it. I'm happier now than I've been in 20 years. It more than makes up for 4 weeks of b!tchiness.

Best wishes for your new you.

Sue

SueMagoo, OMG you're almost there! Congrats! Do you have pics on the before and after page?

Happy Days, hang in there. How long do you have to do the liquids. My doc was merciful, I had 2 slim fast and 1 lean/green meal a day for 2 weeks pre-op. That was pretty easy and post op is just like CoolCrystal said, you won't care, but it doesn't take long to get sick of liquids, you'll have to grin and bear it, but it's still so much easier than dieting.

liquid diet day 4. Much harder than I thought it would be. Yes, I am cranky. Cranky and weak. You would think that with all this "energy" stored in my body as fat, weakness wouldn't be an issue!

I am not allowed anything other than the Protein Drinks.< /p>

However, reading here about people's success is great! Even other cranky hungry posts help me not feel so alone.

I am wondering myself of how that will be. My DH has already told me that he may send the kids to my in-laws. If I have not eaten I usually turn into the biggest Bi#&*h. I have learned to control it but, I know this is going to rough the first few days.

Hey - I just posted a blog entry about this very thing!! I am on day one (well it is after midnight so technically day 2, but you know....) of the 10 day pre-op liquid diet. And OH. MY. GOD. I have been evil. Snappy. Jealous. Crazy. My children are beginning to tell me that they like the way I am and can I please just eat something (they are 8 and 4). I have the same pre-op diet as happy_days and I am going crazy. On day freaking one! My husband looked at me right before he went to bed and said, "This is going to be a long ten days, isn't it?" AARGH! I just keep telling myself that it is important. And that this is such a huge step for me. And that the long term benefits are so huge, that this is more than worth it. And then I see a f*%^ing commercial for all these restaurants. And grocery stores. And every movie we watch has food in it! We were watching a TV show and during the commercial my husband asked me - so what did you think? And I said - the steaks looked really good. So really - I feel your pain. This is hard. And I just can't even think about the fact of how long it is going to be before I get to eat anything real. Every time my mind starts to wander to that thought I start plugging my ears and singing La La La La. So hang in there and know that there are others out there crying slim fast tears too.

I am supposed to lose 16 lbs before my surgery, which should be scheduled when I go to my consultation this Tuesday. My nutritionist put me on 3 Protein Shakes a day, with a salad (or should I say lettuce leaves only). NOT Slimfast. Must be at least 20 grams Protein, and no more than 150 calories and 5 carbs per drink. He suggested the GNC whey protein mix.

Does anybody have any good ideas for which is the best tasting mix and what does it mix best with? I did order the whey protein bullets online yesterday, so waiting for those to come in.

Also, I weigh 320 at 5'7"....how long do you think it will take me to lose 16 lbs drinking 3 shakes a day like that? Any ideas?:confused2:

Hi Vegas Girl. I have been on the pre op liquid diet for 7 days. Today is day 7. I haven't gotten on the scales yet today, but as of yesterday I had already lost 8 pounds. I have to lose 14. So I am sure that we can make our goals. I know that for the next few day, I really need to hit the water!!! I know you can do this.

I am only on day 2 of my liquid pre-op diet, but I have already found a few things that have worked for me (although I'm not going to lie, I am still white knuckling through this):

When I would normally eat a meal, I have some broth because the salt and chicken flavor helps me feel like it is actually a normal meal and then the shakes and all the rest of the day to actually handle the hunger.

Ice and blender - they are becoming my best friend. What I am just choking down as a liquid, I am finding is not bad tasting as a "shake" blended with ice.

The ice blends make me feel fuller at that moment - more than anything else I am able to have right now.

I hated the smell of the Protein powders and started using a straw - not only does that eliminate the smell issue but it helps avoid any stray lumps, which are very gross.

If you begin to crave something sweet, a decent alternative that doesn't break the rules is warm vanilla milk. Just take a mug of milk, add splenda to taste with a little vanilla extract and heat in the microwave. It is pretty good and even the 1% tastes creamy to me.

I have tried the nectar Protein powder in Fuzzy Navel and was surprised at how good it tasted. So it is a great alternative when you are sick of the vanilla, chocolate and strawberry. nectar has a ton of unusual flavors (lemonade, fruit punch, etc) and you just add Water. It is pricey - but I ordered through Vitalady.com a sampler pack so that I could try all the flavors. Besides, given that I am only on Protein Shakes for the 10 day pre-op diet and not having any Protein Shakes AFTER the surgery (I go from Clear liquids to full, etc) between the sampler and carnation instant Breakfast, I am pretty much covered.

The carnation instant Breakfast is surprisingly good. It was basically chocolate or strawberry milk. It didn't fill me up though.

Hope some of that helps - this is a tough part. My surgeon told me that many people (even a year later or when they reach goal) say that the pre-op liquid diet is the hardest part of the entire process. So while it is hard, I guess it's good to know that it's downhill from here!! I hope. :)

Cranky?

hahahah How about hostile!

I've dieted before so I knew in advance what I was in for.

Yep, it happened. But I was prepared. Had the talk with my children beforehand so that when I would get angry/hostile/ yell and scream..... it was to be ignored.

Whew! Glad that's over.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
