OK, I went for my first fill on Monday (which went very well) and haven't had any complications other than a post op infection (which was 2 of the small circular incisions and not the port incision thank goodness) since surgery but today something weird happened.

I was eating my usual hard boiled egg minus the yolk when all of a sudden, I started to feel this tightness in my throat as if the food was getting stuck. The episode increased in intensity for about 1 1/2 minutes. I was relieved by belching but felt as if I needed to throw up (which I successfully tried very hard not to do). Think I just swallowed too much at one time? While the episode was occurring, even swallowing my own spit was too much and only made the feeling worse.

Anyone relate to this? I was worried about it all day at work and therefore didn't eat another thing out of fear.

What you felt was restriction! If you continue to eat after you start to get that feeling you will PB (productive burp) which is absolutely miserable. Also after you have had a fill, whatever you ate that was once "usual" may not be anymore. Be cautious, take small bites and chew well.

I notice I get this when I eat too fast and don't chew good enough.. This has been tough to get used to. I am learning quickly though cause I sure hate it when the food gets stuck in my throat.

Thanks everyone for the info. I kind of thought that was PB'ing but since it was my first episode (and hopefully my last), I wasn't convinced. Take care to all.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
