Diabetic food in Hospital / They aint got a clue

Recommended Posts

:wink2: I was admitted into the hospital over-night for pnumonia (sp). Doing ok they pumped heavy antibiotics in me and I am home. I have to tell you all, they gave me a diabetic diet since I WAS taking 2 shots a day and 4 pills a day for my diabeties before getting the band last June. Let me warn you if you go into the hospital carry your own food. I was laughing at the menu choices here is a sample:

Breakfast - you could pick - 1 meat - 2 fats and 4 carbs

lunch - 2 meats - 2 fats and 6 carbs

dinner - 2 meats - 2 fats and 4-6 carbs.

They don't get it do they... The carbs is what is making everyone diabetics!!! My diet was a 2000 calorie diabetic diet:lol:

So I did not eat any of the food they brought me while I was ther. I had mine brought in from the local drive thru's. It was much healthier than theres.

Sorry you had to be admitted but hope you are feeling better.

It sounds like you need to talk to your doctor about the diet he/she ordered for you while you were in the hospital. I'm a little bit confused.... are you still diabetic or has that gone away since you've lost so much? ...Which, by the way, is great!

Well if the doctor didnt specify a diet plan they would go back to old records and look it up. I guess they don't take into consideration that you might not be diabetic anymore since it seems to be strongly felt that once your diagnosed with diabetes you will always have it. Which we know isnt the case.

You could ask your doctor to have it corrected in your records, with the reason that you don't want all the carbs. or next time you get admitted BEFORE the first meal ask to talk to one of the diaticians.

LOL I had the same experience last year (pre-band) when I had my hysterectomy....after a day of just juice and popsicles not SF things....I had a diabetic order...they even had to give me insulin which I had NEVER had!...

Anyway, the next morning my diabetic tray comes in with a whole banana (I was only allowed half at home...if that!) 2 4oz apple juices...4 pieces of French toast...oh sugar free Syrup (good call!) and a carton of milk 2%...I only used nonfat at home...and to top it off about 4 oz of oatmeal!

My doc came in as I was laughing and wondering...where is my Protein...and don't tell me in the egg wash on the French Toast....

Anyway, I told him if I ate like that at home I would be in a diabetic coma...and if people who are not educated in how to eat for being a diabetic...came to the hospital and thought this was a healthy tray of food...The hospital was never going out of business because people would never understand how to eat healthy!

Thanks for sharing....

BTW...even though my blood sugar is controlled now, not with meds!...I still believe I am a diabetic because it is a remission of sorts but I was told it never goes away.....hm...

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
