Dream Skinny 0 Posted July 9, 2008 I am new to this site. I am from South Carolina and I am exploring my options. A very good friend of mine had the mini gastric bypass in North Carolina and is doing great. I have heard from several people that the lap band has higher risks and usually does not work. Can anyone help me? I really need to lose about 100 lbs. Thanks, Dream Skinny :wink2:
aimlagana 0 Posted July 9, 2008 My sisters both had the gastric bypass and I've had the lapband. My doctor told me that if you are a sugar addict, the band probably isn't for you. With the bypass, you experience malabsorption and you eating sugar makes you sick. Whereas with the band, you can eat around it and defeat it by loads of sugar. I don't want to quote the doc as saying this but my perception is that the bypass tends to be for the people that have alot to lose. I had 80 lbs and I am a sugar addict but I've been able to lose 50 lbs and curb my sugar cravings. One of my major deciding factors was that the lapband is reversible. The bypass is not. Once they remove that portion of your stomach, it cannot be reattached. The band can be removed, if need be. Best of luck on your journey!
