Error in Band Placement

Recommended Posts

I found out this week that my band was not placed correctly when I had it put in last November. I have had very little restriction during that time and even though I was filled to 9cc in a 10cc band, I couldn't understand why I was still able to eat fairly big amounts of food. In the end the dr decided to send me for a barium meal only to discover that the band is wrapped around the fat tissue on the outside of the stomach rather than around the stomach. The dr can't explain how it happened and said he's never seen or heard of it before. Anyone here had this problem? Of course he has offered to go back in with a new band and correct the situation.

Of course now I'm stressing about having to go through this all again. I am booked to go in this Thursday but getting mixed advice about whether I'm doing the right thing. I know a number of people who have been to this dr without any problems, so I'm sure I should be okay but I'm still worried I might be making a mistake. Any thoughts?

I have heard of this happening quite a few times actually. It's easier to do than one might think.

Thanks Michele. Do you remember where you read about it?

Thanks for your response DrC. I'm going back to get it fixed but worried about the outcome. Is it easily fixable?

I havent had this problem but I so sorry that you had to go through this.

Thanks chocolate_snaps, it's not easy, the stress and worry of doing it over again.

I think there was a story about it on Obesity Help. I'm not active on that forum because the people are such drama queens (in fact I've never posted there) but I occasionally cruise by to see the latest "cat fight". LOL

If I were you I'd be in that surgery in a flash. Get that band placed in the correct position, girl! If your doctor sees what happened and is willing to correct it, go for it!

Thanks Michele, I'll see if I can find it.

Thanks Snapdragon, I'm booked in on Thursday but I'm stressed about it as it is unusual and I don't know if there will be added complications because of it. He said the risks are the same as before but my brain is going overtime at the moment.

If your doctor can't tell the difference between fat tissue and stomach tissue, do you really want him doing it again?

There were two cases of this happening on OH in the last few months.

Thanks for your concern Wasa. I was very worried about it being done again by him but as most people said he is going to be doubly careful to fix his mistake. I probably should have held off and thought it through more but in the end I was getting more confused and anxious by the minute, It's been done now and he did an endoscopy while he was in there to make sure. I've had another barium swallow and it all looked fine. I guess only time will tell now.

I meet with a support group who have been banded by him and they all seem fine. Let's hope mine was just an error in judgement on his part and not normal practice.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
