kansascase 0 Posted July 7, 2008 I know two people that have had the gastric bypass and before I got my lapband I also did a lot of research of both procedures. I really would not recommend the gastric bypass - it is permanent - there is no fix. The people that I know didn't have the option of a lapband - not available yet. They would tell you to get the lapband. Both of them have quite a bit of trouble with vomiting and they are now gaining weight as well. The surgery for the gastric bypass is absolutely horrible - you would be one sick individual. One of them thought they would rather die during that first week after surgery. A lot of doctors push the bypass as apparently there are a few more people that keep the weight off than with the lapband. But the difference is probably within the margin of error - pretty small. I also suspect that the surgery is quite a bit more money. Lots of luck to you.
huntersmom 0 Posted July 7, 2008 Bob, I also know two people that have had a bypass done. One of them has gained all her weight back plus some. The other is doing great because she watches what she does and eats. It does seem to take a lot longer for a bander to lose weight but it seems like we keep it off for a lot longer if not for always. I have been banded for just over a year. I have lost 39 pounds so far. I only have to lose 90 altogether. My doctor told me that it would probably take two to three years to take all my weight off. I am not the perfect bander. I like junk food way too much. It is not something that other people can talk you into it, you have to do it for yourself.
