How did you get started exercising?

Recommended Posts

I was banded on June 23 and have been on liquids since June 17. Each day since my surgery day I wake up hoping I'll feel good enough to go for a good walk. I've tried but I get really exhausted after a couple of blocks and my back muscles hurt alot. Is this normal or am I a wimp?

When I read posts it sounds like many if you are up and walking with ease a day or two after being banded. How do you do that?

Have no fear...I wasnt up and full of energy at the beginning. I am the person that didnt like to exercise. I find now when I start it feels so good. Just take baby steps. For me personally I didnt really start working out until about 2 months ago. Make small goals and achieve those.

Do not over-do or try to do too much too soon! You sound like you are doing just fine to me. My doctor says we do not have to exercise at all, but if we want to he recommends short little bursts like 15 minutes done 2 or 3 times a day. Then stop! When you have lost your first 20 pounds you'll notice a big difference in your ability to exercise and you can do more then. The more you loose the easier your exercising will get and you'll come to love it. But remember, "inch by inch it's a cinch"! One inch at a time!! Best of luck to you!

I was banded last October. I didn't start walking for exercise until Jan 1. I started slow, 20 minutes 3 times per week, and I was walking slow, maybe 1.5 miles per hour. Now 7 months later and 85 pounds lighter, I walk 3 to 4 miles per day in 30-45 minutes. I never thought I would say this , but I miss it when I don't have time and I always make it up the next day. Now I am planning my first official 5k walk on Labor Day, and I know it will be easy.

Harvest...I can't tell you how much i LOVE Wii Fit...I actually look forward to getting up in the morning and doing my Yoga and aerobics! It is an expensive venture, but it was worth it. The hardest thing about the Wii Fit is finding one....lol Good luck Kimberly

I dont know really, I just went out and walked the day after surgery and whilst I was less energetic than usual I managed 3kms. I did it every day. After about three months, I tried running, I ran 3kms and never looked back.I entered races to give myself distances to train for, to keep me motivated.

I wasnt *that* unfit I guess. I had a BMI of 35 when I was banded, I've always been pretty athletic and never gave up exercising completely, so it was relatively easy for me.

Now I'm absolutely hooked on running, I love it, so I dont have any problems with motivation.

My surgery "package" included 8 weeks in the cardiac rehab gym at the hospital where I was banded. It's a bit far from my house (30 min each way) but is worth it as the trainer walks every step of the way with me. I started last Monday and walked and did the stationary bike and, today, did 45 min on the treadmill and 35 min on the bike along with starting some small handweights. I managed 5 out of 7 days last week.

I think exercise is very important even if it is a short walk each day.

Several hours after surgery I went for short walks to build up my strength and get rid of gas. I was sore and in pain, but I still went walking.

When I got home, I would go for very short walks around the lake and then go to sleep. It was right after Thanksgiving Day 2008, when I finally felt enough energy to kick up my walking to the treadmill with weights and an incline. Ever since then, I have gradually added more distance.

For me, I try a little bit harder every day. I don't compete against others, I just try to out due my last personal best. And I don't pressure myself to do what I know I am not physically able to do. I know one day, I will achieve my goals, but in order to do that I must start at the beginning and give myself time.

I would get on the treadmill and walk for about 1 minute. Then increased my time as I started to feel I could go longer. Good Luck!

(knock knock almost 60 yr old here...) I didn't start till I had lost about 30 lbs and had some more energy. Of course if you can start walking now that would be great I joined a gym and started slowly with the treadmill and light weights. I then added the elliptical ( could only do 3 minutes the first time) Little by little I added more time and resistance to my work out. I now work out 6 days a week for 2 hours. I do take weight classes and yoga. I still find it hard to believe I actually have some muscle! Good luck and remember take it at your own pace. Good luck.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
