Bloated - Had Surgery July 2

Recommended Posts

I had surgery July 2 and I am still very bloated. I actually weigh a few pounds more than when I went into surgery! Is this normal? How long does the bloating last?:confused2:

I gained 9 lbs the day of surgery...by 5 days later I had lost it and an extra 2 lbs. It will go away! Don't worry! :tt2:

It goes away quickly, don't worry too much about it.

However, you can speed it along and feel better if you can get some Water down. It is hard to just drink a cup of Water directly after banding. It might help to always have a water bottle near and sip, sip, sip througout the day.

Some people are sensitive to the temperature of the water soon after surgery too. You might want to try warm (maybe with some chamomile tea), room temperature (goes down easier for me), or ice cold.

I too gained 8lb's after surgery. took a full 2 weeks before it went away. Now I'm down just over 23lbs. since the day of surgery (31 if I cheated and counted that gained 8lbs . so it can take a while. I've seen others who lose immediately. first time I went to the gym and got on the scale I wanted to cry... I was so bummed. As my DH said patience is a virtue it will go away and it did.

I have written several times before but still haven't heard from anyone who has the same port problem I seem to have - I am only 8 days post-op still swollen and bloated - I am not having trouble swallowing or anything like that - can even swallow my Vitamins with almost no problem - my concern continues to be that my port sticks up so far I have this big goose egg lump sticking out that looks awful - I was told that it would not be seen and maybe not felt but it is very obvious where it is and I can feel it - It makes sense that as my weight goes down in my abdomen that it will go down but when it is all said and done and I am closer to my goal weight I do not want this round thing sticking out so it shows through my shirts. Thanks for any info you can give me.

Hi there Rangerfan, have you contacted your surgeon about this? To be honest I am still a newbie here, I have done a lot of reading and research on the banding and I haven´t heard about your problem before. I hope that someone else here can help you out with a positive answer. In the meantime, if this is worrying you, contact your surgeon so you get a straight direct answer. Let us know what´s happening.

Hey Rangerfan,

I am 3 days post op and I can't see or even feel my port. My doctor assured me it's there, but I can't tell. You will have to check with your doctor ~ could possibly be swollen internally. That just doesn't seem right by all the stuff I have read. Good Luck to you and let us know what happens after you meet with the doctor.

Yes this is normal. Your body has just had a serious trauma/surgery! It is doing the best it can and sometimes that means it's hoarding fluids.

Just follow your doctors instructions very carefully, let yourself heal up inside and be gentle and careful with yourself. It will all happen in good time. Six or seven days from now you should feel much better. Call your doctor's nurse for further tips if you wish.

All of these symptoms will disappear in 4 to 6 weeks. Until then you'll have any number of things to contend with. Focus on living a healthier lifestyle instead.

My doctor told me yesterday he thought it would go away but it is still pretty sore and sticks up - he said I didn't have much "room" between my first layer of fat and my muscle or whatever and so it may stick out more on me than on others - it is very distressing - it is very obvious

I know what you mean, truly I do. I had three incisions of the five that had these stiff, very sharp "fishing line" looking pointed things sticking out of my skin! I was not amused let me tell you! I was hugely bloated and looked very pregnant and I was scared that anyone would hit me in the gut and break it all open. Finally one morning I got up and it had gone way down but it was not soon for me. I did not cut them, touch them or mess with them in any way per doctors orders. He told the truth though, it all really does go away, you just have to wait for it.

Lapband surgery is MAJOR abdominal surgery and the body has a lot to contend with getting healed up from it. Everyone makes very light of it and the recovery process involved but it's no piece of cake for the body to recover. Instead of worrying about this stuff, focus on how to eat differently, focus on changing your life now. The other stuff will fall into place when it does and your new life will be well underway by then.

How you change the rest of your life is the task at hand for you to handle.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
