Does everyone strain their food on full liquid phase?

Recommended Posts

I'm 7 days post-op and on

5 days post op the dietician said I could start full liquids. I was having hunger pangs so she put me on full liquids. Anything I wanted to eat, blended and strained and thin enough to go thru straw.

Not heard on this board but is everyone straining their foods?

I know the purpose is so food doesn't get stuck.

Are their any foods not tolerated by some?

I find I can only hold 3-4oz. at a full liquid meal.

Is this the same for others?

In the hospital I had a dry heave (nausea spell) they said it was normal.

Just mentioning this for others who are doing research on band.

Yummm, egg drop Soup. That stuff got me THROUGH! No straining...if there were small chunks of anything (like with the Campbells Soup at Hand) I either chewed it first or spit it out, then I realized some of the smaller things were going down fine, so I quit worrying about it. I used the straw test. I figure if a chunk is small enough to make it through a straw, I should be okay, and I was.

I did the same thing Kathy did, chewed and spit, after being on liquids, it was just as good as swallowing, LOL. It is amazing what will go through a straw.

No straining for me - no blending or mashing either. I had to do 6 weeks of full liquids after surgery.

I had 3 CIB drinks a day. Each is 20 grams of Protein and 230 calories. What I did was:

1 packet of Carnation Instant Breakfast (get the blue box -- no-sugar added)

1 cup skim milk

1/3 cup powdered milk.

Mix it all up and drink! I would have 1/2 of one every 2-3 hours during the day, for a total of 60 grams of Protein, 690 calories.

Since we can have more calories than that, I also had Soups, koolaid (sugar free), whatever. I would have vegetable beef Soup, but just eat the broth -- not the veggies and not the meat.

This isn't a time to see what you can get away with -- this is when you heal your stomach.

I'm getting tired of all this straining. If it's blended well and looks like Tomato Soup I should think it's ok. If runny cr. of wheat is ok what about grits runny style. The grits would go thru a straw?

I'm going to speak to another dietician today and I'll be seeing the Doc. Nurse tomorrow so I will run it by her.

Foods that I have blended and strained.

1. baked pot with broth and baby meat blended in.

2. green beans/broth

3. oatmeal --this does not strain good

Well, it depends on your dr's advice and how much you can tolerate. I was told to not worry about my calorie intake at all, but to make good food choices.

It's a type of Soup you get in Chinese restraunts. I don't like it. But I do like Hot and Sour Soup which also comes from Chinese restraunts.

I'm pretty sure the egg drop Soup starts with a chicken broth base, then eggs, whipped up with a whisk, are dropped into the soup. The eggs cook, but they are very runny so you have basically runny egg soup.

It's surprisingly delicious, very satisfying, full of protien and perfect for the newly banded. Don't know what I would have done without it. And it's affordable. The little Chinese restaurant up the road sells a large for $1.75. Cheap 2 meals!

I never strained food but bought baby food instead. A little salt and pepper and you'r ready to go. Sugarfree jelly and sugarfree pudding saved my life.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
