Liver shrinking diet/ Ketosis?/ Atkins diet??

Recommended Posts

Hi there,

I noticed as i research the web. people are on alot of different diets to acheive liver shrinking for surgury. Some are on Optifast, some are on medifast( which is real food) my Diet is "no calorie liquids, protien shakes ( attkins was recomended ), Attkins bars, and if i really have to i can have chicken, lean beef, boiled egg, or low carb cheese". so long as i don't exceed 40 - 50 carbs daily. I wasn't given a clear indication of whether ketosis was my goal. Just by the wording of the diet i think it is, because it says " No cough syrups, mints, etc. cause it will knock me out of ketosis" If Ketosis is my goal then 40-50 carbs daily is way to high for me. I can't exceed 20-25 carbs or i'll knock my self out of ketosis. ( old attkins Pro Here! hee hee).

I guess my question is if ketosis is my goal why not just go on attkins for 1o days? Anyone get advice on this from a doctor?

I am following my diet as described to me, i am just curious!

The main goal is to shrink the liver, the secondary goal is to reach ketosis so you don't feel hunger. If you just do the regular old Atkins diet then you'll eat too much fat and not shrink the liver. If you were to do low fat, low carb type atkins then I'm sure it's going to give you similar results. My surgeon does the Optifast diet and most people hit ketosis by Day 3 but they are still consuming very little fat. I'd just do what your surgeon suggest. It's a very small amount of time to prepare yourself for surgery so might as well do what the "experts" we have chosen to perform our surgery suggest.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
