My surgery is scheduled for next Tuesday 5/17 in Pontiac MI by Dr. Pleatman. Any presurgery hints would be welcome. I was wondering how long it will be before I can Golf and Fish again? Hope its short. Looking forward to reading more of your posts soon. My starting point is 340 but I'm fairly active and in good health.

Each person seems to heal differently. I would say no longer than 2 weeks, but maybe sooner if you heal faster. My doctor told me I could ride my Harley after 2 weeks, so fishing and golfing is definately in that range. Just go by how you are feeling, if you are up to it, give it a try.

Get your food/drinks in now before you go so you won't have to worry about it when you come home.

Use a heating pad for any gas pains in the shoulder and don't forget that walking helps more than anything else does.

Showers only until you totally heal up (no baths or swimming pool)

Good luck with your surgery and post when you can and let us know how you did.

Thanks Harley Girls. Now that I know that it is a runway, I can "take off" to a new body that I'll be able to "model" for everyone. GRIN Down to three days and begining to feel this may just happen.

Ready.

Good luck to you, Ron. Check w/your doc. re: golfing. That swinging motion could possibly strain the port area (where the port is stiched down). You really sound great, and we're looking forward to hearing more from you.

Just got back to Wisconsin from Michigan this afternoon Weds 5/18/05. I was operated on at around 8AM on Tuesday 5/17/05 in Pontiac Michigan, surgery lasted about an hour. My Surgeon was Doctor Pleatman who I had first met the day before. I am a self pay and he had cut through all the red tape so scheduling was easy and quick with him. Great guy ...very personable and explained every thing that was going to happen then checked on me afterwards and gave me the okay to travel when I was ready. After surgery I was awake before noon. They gave me a pill and I slept more till around 3pm. Woke up feeling great (other than a sore throat), had my wife there with me giving support. Dressed and left the hospital around 4PM. Took the hour drive to Toledo (damn potholes) to spend the night with relatives but arrived feeling fine. Walked a block upon arriving with no problems and went in and socialized with them and watched TV. Towards the end of the night I started having a few minor pains in the left shoulder but used the heating pad at night (Thanks to the member who suggested it) and slept great after taking a couple Tylenol.

Awoke this AM, felt even better, walked a couple blocks, had a shake and we left back for WI. Five hour ride, we stopped 4 times so I could walk a while to prevent bloodclots. Feeling fine now (5:45Pm) except for a little soreness in the chest/ stomach area (incisions) when I move, the sore throat is gone. But overall I (nor anybody else) can't believe how well I feel after having been through this.

Thanks to all the members who have given support and it was a special treat to meet Christina at the DR.'s office. God bless you all and I hope your surgery goes as well.

I don't want to over do it so I won't go dancing tonight (Kidding)

But I am shooting for Golf in two weeks.

Best regards,

Ron

Break down of costs: Dr. $5K, Hospital $7K includes $3k for band, Sandman $0.5K:

Total $12.5K

Guess the rest is up to me and the band.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
