Who's Getting Banded in August???

Recommended Posts

Hello! I am not nervous about the surgery, just nervous about not waking up. I have a six year old, so I kinda obsess about that

however minimal the risk is. I have had 6 surgeries in my lifetime and only the last two of those even concerned me. Simply for the fact that I did have a child w/ those two. Also, having to anticipate the results for the biopsy for cancer. It would be great to keep in touch. If I can be of any support just ask.

Liquids for me start tomorrow, and then of course nothing for the day of surgery. I had my blood work and EKG done yesterday. I didn't even think about not getting a chest xray. I know several who had to have one. I guess my mind was on the brain scan I would be having later that day. That was not related to the lap band test though. So surgery is a go unless my results for the scan are not favorable. Those results come in tomorrow.

Good luck to you and will be in my prayers.

:thumbup:Was banded to day and am spending the night in the hospital. (it was my choice and my surgeon advised that since I've really never had surgery before that it might make sense for me to stay). I just discovered that the hospital has wireless!!

The day went very smoothly; I want to reassure everyone who is about to go in for their big day. Main problem I'm having now is gas pains but nothing I can't deal with. I have not taken any pain meds yet... we'll see how the night goes tho.

Hang in there everyone about to have their surgery.... it's really not so bad!

Paula, I'm totally ready and not nervous at all. I pre-registered today and I'm ready to go. I've lost 18 lbs preop and I feel great and I just want to get going. I'd love to keep in touch. Good luck to you on Thursday. Bonnie

Had my pre-op physical and nutrition training today. Everything is ready to go for my Aug. 26th surgery date, except I am waiting on my school refund check. They sent it out on Friday, so hopefully it will be in the mailbox tomorrow. I paid them the $8000 I already have today, so I think that will be enough to hold them for a few days. I officially start my seven days of Medifast next Tuesday, but I am going to do a partial Medifast this week, too, with maybe a shake for Breakfast and lunch and some pudding for a snack, with a regular dinner. I am SOOOO ready to get this all over with!

Turtletears-I think you will have great results on your scan! I hope they get the results back quickly and don't make you wait around.

vegasgirl44,

Wow that's great that you've lost 18 lbs pre-op. How long were you on the liquid diet?

When I went Monday to pre-register, I had lost 9 lbs. I'm sure they will weigh me before surgery so I can see if I have lost any more.

I haven't found out what time to go to the hospital in the morning. They are supposed to call today actually anytime now.

Good luck tomorrow! I will be checking in.

Paula, I started Protein Shakes about July 10th or so. I started out with the shakes, and then I would have baked chicken breast and salads. I lost a lot at first and then had a 2 week period with no weight loss. My goal was 16 lbs according to my doc. 5% of my body weight. I think that time of the month had a lot to do with it. I have really bad PMDD. Then last week, BAM!, I started losing again. The night after my last surgeon consult, I went to Claimjumper and had roasted chicken, veggies, and a huge corn muffin. It was awesome! Then I went back on plan the next day and the weight started to come off again. I think the biggest thing to remember is that when you hit a plateau, to keep on keepin' on, because eventually, it's going to fall off. You can't go hog-wild and eat all kinds of crap just because you've decided you are not losing. That has always been my downfall. And I was terrified of not following plan and the surgeon having to go in and do it open. I am self pay and I don't need any more expenses. I go in at 8:30 am and surgery at 10am. Good luck to you. I'm so excited. I feel like I'm going on a trip. At least, I'm packing like I am. LOL!

I was banded on Monday August 11th. I actually wake up now and wonder if it was a bad dream. Did it really happen? I recommend anyone if you can to stay overnight. Do it. The hospital makes a very good cocktail for pain. All and all it was not that bad. Nothing like a C-section I had 2 years ago. I am at home now. I feel very tired and I do have a lot of gas trapped in my chest. It helps to move around. I think this was probably the easiest part the 6months and then surgery. I think for me it will be difficult to learn to eat in small portions and retrain my habits. Good Luck to everyone who is still getting banded. I still feel it was worth it. I have no regrets. But I have to admit - when I was waiting to go into surgery and they had started my IV - I started talking myself out of the surgery. (In my head) I just kept saying am I this out of control with food. Before I knew it the Dr. injected some medication into my IV and I was out. I woke up on the other side.

Paula, yippee! You will be going in before me due to the time difference. I'm 2 hours behind you. By the way, I lived in San Antonio for 30 years. I'm not sure where Lufkin is. What are you taking to the hospital with you?

vegasgirl44,

Lufkin is about 120 miles NE of Houston. We are about 4-5 hours from San Antonio.

My surgery is out-patient so I won't bring much with me to the hospital. Probably just a bag with hairbrush/personal items and a pillow for the ride home.

Is your surgery out-patient? What are you taking with you?

Well, it is considered outpatient, but I stay overnight. The difference is that my work is not making me take my PaidTimeOff hours. Some doctors like to make sure that everything is working ok before you take off. The first several hours are very important. I know the following morning I have to have an upper GI done so they test the band before I leave. It's just all precautionary.

I'm taking a book and a couple magazines. My slippers and robe. I think I'll take my heating pad because I heard that really helps with pain and my makeup, cellphone, and eyeglasses. I'm leaving all my jewelry off and my purse at home. My boyfriend is like, don't you need your drivers license? and I'm like NOPE! The doctor's office just called to see how I was doing and if I was excited and I was like Heck, Yea! I feel like I'm going on a trip tomorrow to some fantastic place and I have to get up early to catch the plane! LOL! Bonnie

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
