Tricare - Moved from 'Pending' to.....

Recommended Posts

APPROVED!!!! I'm so excited!! I have my physch eval tomorrow and hopefully will be scheduling my surgery then. I was really worried that I wouldn't get approved because I'm not 100 lbs over the metlife recommended weight scale. But I have a lot of comorbids. So I guess that was enough to put me in the approved category!! In my family there is a history of death from strokes, diabetes and heart disease. I'm 35 and mother of 4 kids that are under 6. I want to be there for my kids and husband.

I haven't told my husband yet, because he would never go for this surgery. So I still don't know what to do about that!?!?! Guess i need to get me a weightloss tracker on my name now!!

Congrats to you. I, too, had my surgery paid for by Tricare. Don't want to overstep my boundries, here, but you really need to talk to your husband. Once the surgery is over, recover is different for everyone. I had mine done on Friday and by Monday, I was only suffering from gas. I don't work nor have little children, but the children might be a blessing for you. They can take Mommy for a walk. Good luck and keep in touch. D'

No over stepping, I know I need to talk to him, but he would NOT be supportive in the least bit. He's a Marine/Navy man and believes that if you want it to come off...you should work it off. He would think surgery is a shortcut and might see it as me being a slacker and lazy.

So...that's my dilema!

I know exactly how you feel. My husband is also a Navy man and thinks if I just got myself to the gym I'd loose weight. He hasn't been around me my entire life and doesn't realize that this has been a LIFELONG battle for me and no amount of exercise/dieting has ever gotten me to my ideal weight. I also have 2 small children and I think he worries that something will happen to me and I won't be around to raise them/be with him.

So, I take my blood tests tomorrow and then get submitted to Tricare. He knows I've been to the Dr. but I've decided not to have any serious discussion with him about it until I find out if I've been approved or not. I've told him as much. So, I'll cross that bridge when/if I come to it. If he is seriously afraid for my safety and asks me not to do it though, I won't. I had a very difficult delivery with our last child that almost took our lives. I think that had a serious effect on him.

Doesn't mean I won't do just about anything to persuade him and make him feel more comfortable about it. :biggrin2:

Congratulations!

My husband at this point is extremely supportive of the idea. In years past, I heard, "Take a motrin (the only pill army docs give), go for a run, you'll feel better." He hasn't seen me at my smallest, but we married 50 pounds and 13 years ago. He has seen me try every diet known to man, and join the gym, take pills, etc. I lost 40 pounds BOTH times he was in Iraq, and 20 the year he was in school between deployments. The problem was that it was stress that took it all off, so I gained it all back within a few months. Now, he says whatever I have to do for me is fine with him. I think as long as I stop bitching about being fat, he is fine with it......

I don't know what to do. I want the surgery but I don't want to listen to the grief from my husband. He will be travelling so much over the next few months. I have my family that will help me out when he is gone. Anyway...going for my phych eval today and hopefully scheduling the surgery and the rest of it too.

Hi mommy of 4..now are you working for metlife or something or was that scale just something you were going by? By the way sorry for the way your hubby may feel. Mine is an airforce man and would talk about people like dirt about how lazy they were and taking the easy way out but actually...w/ me he sees it as a last resort because Ive struggled w/ my weight since 2nd child in 01. I hope everything works out for you...Im still trying to start my process...im 239 5/6 and 38.5-39 bmi so hopefully thats enough i dont hv any comorbities other than fam history. Take care

Let me know what you tell him that "sells" him. If I get approved this week I'll also have to convince my DH. We have 2 small children. I think he's worried something will happen to me. I know he wants me to be happy and I know he loves me either way. I just think he's concerned about my safety. I may ask him to take the day off and come to the preop appt (if I'm approved). Hopefully that will put his mind at ease and answer all of his questions.

Hello and congrats to you!

I hope I am not being to forward by asking this question.

What is your BMI, weight and what co-morbitites do you have? I am starting the process on Thurs with my PCP. But I also do not meet the 100lb requirment. So I am fearful of the rejection.

Thanks in advance for any info or advice you can provide.

I, too, just went from "pending" to Approved!! Yay! I didnt think mine would make it either b/c I'm a little shy of the "magic" 100 lbs...but I too had alot of comorbidities, and I guess that helped. I was really getting worried b/c I've been seeing alot of denied's on here as well. I was actually getting all my appeal paperwork ready! But now I'm so relieved...and hopefully my surgery will be sometime in Sept (a great birthday present...a new ME!!) What will we Sept surgeries be calling ourselves?? Congrats to all the approvals and good luck to all the pendings!!

Sometimes reading the posts here make me wonder if some people just weren't mentally ready for WLS and needed more time with the bariatric team psychiatrist. Complaining about the limited drink/food choices early on... blah..blah...blah. The living to eat mentality really needs to go and be replaced with eating to live. JS

We have to remember that everyone moves at their own pace. For some it may be harder to adjust, people may have other factors at play that feed into the unhealthy relationship with food e.g. eating disorders, trauma. I'd hope those who you are referring to address this outside of this forum, with a professional.

This is a place to feel safe to vent, seek advice, hopefully without judgement.

Compassion goes a long way :)

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.
