Hi everyone,

Well, I was on this board about a year ago and now I'm back, so, I'll reintroduce myself. I live in TN and am a single "mom" to my two dogs and a cat. :) I have been overweight all my life but really never thought about it until I joined the Army in 1995 and had to lose weight to join. While in the Army I maintained a weight around 135lbs but was still overweight by their standards and had to be "taped" at every weigh in. I'm now at the heaviest I've ever been and having severe sleep apnea (have a sleep study scheduled in two days) and not I've seemed to have developed acid reflux.

I did research on the lap band (the procedure I want to get) a year ago but thought I could work through my eating issues but here I am a year later and heavier than last year.

I'm going to a seminar in July and I'm making my sister go. My sister will be supportive and although my mom doesn't think I should get it, she too will be supportive once its done.

I look forward to learning a lot on the board and asking questions. I'd like to speak or email anyone that had their surgery done in Nashville.

Good luck to everyone.

Melinda

I just recently had the surger--- three days ago to be exact. I think you have to follow your heart. A word of advice, make your decision and then tell as few people as possible. All the added opinions, glances and advice will drive you crazy and make you second guess yourself when you don't need to..Good Luck

Thank you very much for the advice. I've read the post about some people not wanting to tell people. I suppose I'll feel it out as I get more into the weeds with this whole thing. I'm pretty much an alpha personality and usually don't let what others think matter too much. However, since this is a new situation that will carry alot of emotion, I'm sure, I'll take a day by day approach. My mom will be the one helping my post op and taking care of my furkids, so she has to know. :)

I just found this sight while I was looking for what to expect and not to expect from anyone that has had surgery also. My story is kind of like your my mom and sister. Seem to be supporting me but Mom says she is afraid I still won't be happy. I am having the surgery July 8 at Baptist in Nashville.

Well, good luck to you and keep us posted on how it goes. My only concern is my mom telling her relatives. I'm not fond of them and really don't associate with them at all and they are very negative. I'll have to cross that bridge when and if the time comes but express to my mom that I'll be very upset with her if she blabs it to the whole town.

Which doctor are you using at Babtist?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
