PB and sliming

Recommended Posts

I think I am experiencing this for the first time. I was expecting horrific pain but it hasn't been that way. I went out to eat with my daughters and it was a piece of chicken that did it. I had to hurry and whisk them to the rest room (2 yrs and 5 yrs) while I stood in a stall and tried to take care of the problem. Horrible, having them there. I gave up, took their dinners to go and off we went. I've been spitting in a cup ever since....sliming?? On top of this I have a

killer headache and can't keep my liquid tylanol down.

That's sliming allright.

It is possibly THE most annoying thing about being banded, when it happens its a pain in the ass. For me it rarely goes on to be a PB (and I cant make myself PB) so it goes on for ages, really embarrassing and inconvenient if you happen to be in public.

Its not horrendously painful, just damn annoying.

This is one reason I haven't had fills yet - I just can't imagine handling this especially with the kids. I am sorry - I hope it is better!

no you don't need liquids but you do need to take it easy for the night and start out light and slow tomorrow morning. even liquids aren't going to feel so great tonight. Sorry that happened to you, it's no fun. What I do when we eat out is get the to go box first. That way I don't over do it. I can eat more at home than in public, it might be the way I sit or that at home I am jumping up to get things and moving around. Eating out is something I refuse to give up up I have really had to make some changes.

When this happens to me I go to the bathroom and stick my finger at the back roof of my mouth to stimulate my gag reflex. Then I throw up a big wad of thick slimy mucous with a little food mixed in. I do this two or three or four times and then I feel great again. It sounds gross but it's not really. It is not like throwing up exactly. There is no gross smell or taste. The mucous and the little bit of food that's stuck has not made it to the stomach yet so it is not mixed with the stomach acids. So it is quick, easy and effective.

I can just lean over the toilet with my hand on my stomach and usually the mucus will come up. Not pleasant, but a good deterrent for eating more slowly and carefully.

If I continue to have problems with the next meal, I switch to liquids for a meal or two, which usually takes care of the problem.

I welcomed myself to the club- I just slimmed for the first time last night- though no food came up- just saliva as I bent over the toliet. So my question is- is the food still stuck? I feel kinda weird today- psychological?

I just had a horrible PB/ slime experience today. I was starving and I stopped and got a small chicken cheese steak, planning to only eat half. Needless to say I only made it past 3 bites and I experienced pain so bad I thought I was in labor again! I had to pull over 3 times while drive and the whole episode lasted about an hour and 15 min. I thought about going to the ER, or driving straight to my doctor's office. I made it home and I had to use a popsicle stick to gag myself causing some mucous and who knows what else to come up. I still feel like I am physically drained from the whole thing and I feel sore on my left side where the band is. I think the thing I need to keep in mind is I should have had a nice yogurt and string cheese for lunch and this wold not have happened. I am interested to hear about other experiences like this and what you can do to make it better. I NEVER want to go through that again......

I was having very mushy potato salad tonight (I have had it before) and was also very hungry! I must have ate to fast and was it ever stuck! It took about 3 or 4 times of gagging up slime to get it out. I am also due for a fill in 2 weeks (I haven't had one yet) but with this happening and me already eating so much less I am thinking that maybe I don't have to right away?? Is it even worse after a fill?

I have had slime once and it was VERY painful ( maybe a stuck too?) and when it finally released itself it was such relief! I did do liquids the next day but that was a personal choice as I was "testing the waters" so to speak. I have since learned the warning signs of my body and if I take one bite that just doesn't seem right I STOP and wait. I know this may sound over paranoid. From reading this site I have learned to ( I know I repeat myself) chew to a paste, slow down between bites, recognize when I have a "pressure" feeling after taking a few bites, Hiccups are a warning sign ( that I listen to now) and I am VERY anti-social when I eat ( not really but I try not to socialize to much and concentrate on what I am doing) Bless your heart I am sorry that happened to you, especially with the two young ones with you!

Everyone on this site use to talk about sipping pineapple juice when you get meat stuck. I haven't seen it mentioned here yet so I will let you know it does work. There is something in the pinapple juice that starts to break down the meat above the band. This is something I use in extreme measures not so I can eat more but it sure beats a trip to the emergency room. When I first got banded, I bought a six pack of small pineapple juices, I keep one at work, one in my purse and one in the glove compartment. You just never know.

I have had one day where I started vomiting and then felt like I could not stop sliming for over an hour. Tried small amount of soft cheese and a cracker and it calmed right down.

Papaya enzyme is also supposed to work. You can get it at GNC and it is a chewable. Tastes pretty good and is better than the meat tenderizer my doc recommened for this kind of problem.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
