July Butterflies Master Thread

I got my 5th fill today. Went to Olive Garden with some out of town family and didn't fill the restriciton. Good thinking on how much you chew and I have not chewed to the point of apple sauce. I never really had big bites of food and then not chewed it throughly so I am lucky there. When I drink it feels that that gets stuck but the food does not fill me up. I am now at 9.8cc's in a 9cc band. I don't know what to do. I got bitched at for not eating all the correct foods. I then reminded him that I paid for a tool and that tool is not helping me. I sure wouldn't have paid for something that doesn't work and expect myself not to have the eating disorder that I have had for 30 years. Seems ridicilous! They need to find the problem get it fixed cause I think 4 months is showing enough patience. I lost 3 lbs in the last 3 weeks but it was a different scale so I am not so sure.

I hope soon I can get the help I so want!

Joiful, it doesn't seem that you've grasped what the band is all about yet. The band is a tool, not a magic wand. The band doesn't do all the work for you, you have to make the band work. Have you ever thought that maybe your not being "bitched" at? I'm sure that your health care team is trying to get you to better understand your band so the tool will begin to work for you.

I'm sorry if you feel offended. It is not my intent. You just need to realize that there is a lot of work you need to do. The band will not do it all.

Joiful -

Why be so hard on yourself and your doctor? The band is a tool that if we use it properly (meaning eating the right foods and exercising) we will lose weight. You need to remember 1-2lbs a week is normal.

I know this is a struggle for me. I too eat the wrong foods, but I can't blame the band or my doc for these struggles. It's up to me to make the changes.

Hang in there.

I have 4.5 ccs in an 8 cc band. I don't think I'm ready for another fill but I need something to get myself back on track. After TOM leaves, I'm going to try the 5 Day Pouch Test.
Just giving you an up date: I'm day 4 on 5 day pouch test and guess what, I weighed this morning even if I wasn't going to until the end of day 5 but couldn't resist and down 3lbs YEAH! I'm now 0.4 lbs from onderland, not even a whole 1/2 lb. I'm so excited I can just taste onderland It's my first goal for myself.

Joyful, I hope this finds you in better spirts. And hope I'm not insulting you when I say: That I keep hearing you say the band is not working for you and let me just say that the band does not do the work it just makes it bearable for YOU to do the work and trust me it's hard work I've learned that along the way. If you just would take a minute to read your prior post on this thread about what you've been eating then I think you'll find it's alot of carbs. The people that are losing are not eating like that, check their post and I think that's what you'll see. just do the math and then deside how much effort your willing to put into this. I really beleave we only get back what we put in. Good luck to you and if you need it we're all here for you.

Joiful, Kimaly is right. I started eating empty carbs the last couple of weeks and guess what?.....I haven't lost a lb since my last fill. You have to change your eating habits. The band won't work well eating carbs....it works best eating hard Protein. Give it a try.....stay off of empty carbs for a week and see if you don't start losing. Also, try to walk 30 minutes a day. We all want you to succeed! Don't give up! You can do it!

Shrinkme - When I had "heartburn" the doc said I was tight. After a few days it did go away. I stayed on liquids for the first few days after my fill.

Kimaly - I'm thinking about the 5 day pouch test too. Glad to see you saw some results. Do you also think you're "re-sizing" your restriction? I hear that's supposed to happen as well.

Oh yes, I can tell. I'm allowed by my fill center 3/4 of a cup and I would average about that and alot of times a whole cup and I have it at 1/2 of cup now with no problem. Hope to keep it there for awhile.

I lost all that weight BEFORE the band. That is why I am so frustrated. To have my successful efforts be brought to a screeching halt by the Optifast and subsequent raging nonstop hunger really hurts. It's like bandster hell squared.

But things are getting a little better. The hunger is less intense and even goes away for a while the past day or so. Perhaps the worst is over.

Can you say "extremely sensitive to sugar?"

Next fill Thursday.

Orea, I'm glad it's getting better for you. Being hungry all the time is terrible. I bet your weight loss will start picking up now.

Great news! I plan on starting the 5 Day Pouch test next Monday and getting back to exercising today! I had to lay off the exercise to rest my knee for a couple of weeks but those couple of weeks turned into a couple of months. I really need to get back into the swing of things. Before I go back to the doctor for a 5th fill, I'm going to do the 5 Day Pouch test to see if that helps. I really don't want to be overfilled to the point I start turning to slider foods. I think that's a slippery road.

Joiful, please don't go away again. I know you might be a bit upset right now but everyone here means well and we all want to see you succeed. Stay on this journey with us, even if you feel like going it alone. It really does help to have support both positive reinforcement as well as constructive criticism.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
