Right, but now that some of us are 300 lbs., we'd be happy to be 200. I'm not saying that someone who weighs 200 or so shouldn't have surgery,because if they feel they should have it, then they should, I'm just saying that those who feel they shouldn't probably feel that way because they'd be satisfied at 200 now that they are 300.

But the problem is that some people think - if you're only 200 lbs just diet - well my 200 lbs (because I'm short) is your 300 lbs. I have the same problems that you have at 300 Lbs - both physcially and mentally. So again - YES 200 lb people should be able to have the surgery.

Also, if you are happy at 200 lbs - you might need your mindset changed. Unless you're tall - 200 lbs is still a lot of weight to carry around.

Hey that is what this forum is for right? To ask questions and see what other people might think and may be able to help. I was at BMI 34 when I got banded and just over 200lbs. I am 5'8" and still considered obese and still feel obese. Degenerative arthritis and a heart condition, hypertension, etc. all allowed me to get banded and my insurance paid. I have lost 17lbs. and still have 57lbs. to go for my first goal. Then I want to lose about another 20lbs. if I can. I am going for it anyway. I was thin my entire life until about 10 yrs. ago. I am 50 yrs old now. It is not fun to be overweight for whatever you feel overweight is for yourself. Each person is different and no two people are going to feel the same about it. But I am glad I got banded and can't wait to get filled.

i think if it is a self pay than you should be able to do it under 200 lbs, but if you expect your insurance company to cover it, i think you should be at least in the mighty 2's if not steadily in them

AMEN! I am right at 200 pounds NOW.. (after having lost 83 pounds).. I am sooo much happier, more active, and FEEL BETTER THAN I HAVE IN YEARS... But........ 200 pounds, as stated, is still a lot of weight to carry around on these old joints/bones! I intend to get down to my NORMAL/HEALTHY weight and STAY THERE! I just wish I had this choice years ago BEFORE I BECAME NEARLY 300 POUNDS! Kudos to those of you who are doing something BEFORE it gets to that point!

Quite honestly losing weight is hard, I'd say anything over 30lbs is pretty hard. For instance I spent most of my young life with only 30lbs to lose. Except I worked my ass off and got nowhere. I was always still hungry and I'd lose and gain and lose and so on. Then my thyroid went crazy, as did my horomones...and I ballooned up to 267 at 5'4". I realize I didn't spend as long being fat as a lot of people on this board, but my family has crazy insane health risks and just being fat for that short period of time was destroying me. And even at 267 that same cylce of lose,gain,lose, gain...kept going. So I say if the person has health problems and has tried like mad to get it off, I really think it's a decision for that person and their doctor.

200 pounds a 5'2" was a problem for me so much so insurance thought it was severe enough to cover it. I think it depends on a lot of factor but in most cases I would say yes!

for a 6' tall male that weighs 210 - no

a 5' woman at 200 - yes

It obviously would depend on height (bmi)...

Even for a 5ft 10 female ........ I was darn fat at 200 .... rolls round the stomach, big floppy boobs, dimply thighs.

Heck, I was still pretty darn fat at 180.

At 150, I've STILL got weight I could lose. I'm no longer overweight, but I could stil reasonably trim off 15lb or so (without becoming underweight).

It also depends totally on your body type. I'm meant to be skinny, I'm finely boned and muscled and I just dont carry any excess weight well.

There's no point for me calling it curvy or anything - its fat. It may not be on someone else.

My daughter is 5'7" and has had to battle her weight, just like her mom, all her life. She is about 30lbs overweight right now. Her major problem is that she can't control how much she eats and she is a carb addict. My dr told me he believes her to be the perfect candidate for a LAP-BAND®, but that the AMA wouldn't allow him to do it because they feel she isn't obese enough.

well I think anyone who needs and wants the surgery should have it. I myself am just 5'2" and my BMI is 40.5 so I just made the cut off for surgery. I've been overweight since I was 10 so 30 years of trying to loose weight and keep it off.

I might not have co-morbidities but I can not do yo- yo dieting anymore.

Just asking this question pisses me off. I really hate it when people try to grade "need" like this. I hate it when people moan that they are so heavy that they really *need* this surgery because they are 200 lbs. overweight while other people are "only" 100 lb. overweight and don't deserve it as much as them. That's just as ridiculous as this question.

You go with your bad self! I completely agree. It's not for anyone to judge what is or isn't appropriate based on numbers...there are exceptions to every rule. I'm just starting my 6 month diet pre-surgery, but *sheesh*. Just because my numbers are in the 200 vicinity, doesn't mean that I'm not going to have a heart attack or stroke. My blood pressure is high, my sugar is low, and after years of the yo-yo dieting what would you suggest? I've heard, "If you really TRIED". WTF???? Do people really believe that alternating between starvation and deprivation isn't trying? It's down right desperation.

As far as this poll is concerned, an old Indian proverb says, "Do not judge another until you have walked a mile in his moccasins."

I've been reading posts almost every day for about a month and finally found one that I HAD to reply to...heck of a first reply, huh? Sorry!:(

Its a hard one Froggi. I have heard of celebs being banded when they are considered underweight and the doctors seem to think thats it Ok because it is for work reasons. I was well under 200 when banded but that was only because I had lost my weight with Reductil (7 years)and it was losing its effectiveness and I knew I would be right back to my top weight and as I have considerable health problems at my top weight the doctors were obliging enough to do and not wait for me to gain the weight back before they operated. I havent lost much weight on the band but I havent gained either. It is much harder work than the Reductil was when it was working but I dont really have many choices left if I want to stay healthy. So at the moment I am working hard with it. Despite max fills I still feel hungry and the only restriction comes when I feel like I will vomit so I know I must be at peak and then I stop eatingeven though still hungry

      Sometimes reading the posts here make me wonder if some people just weren't mentally ready for WLS and needed more time with the bariatric team psychiatrist. Complaining about the limited drink/food choices early on... blah..blah...blah. The living to eat mentality really needs to go and be replaced with eating to live. JS

        We have to remember that everyone moves at their own pace. For some it may be harder to adjust, people may have other factors at play that feed into the unhealthy relationship with food e.g. eating disorders, trauma. I'd hope those who you are referring to address this outside of this forum, with a professional.


        This is a place to feel safe to vent, seek advice, hopefully without judgement.


        Compassion goes a long way :)

      Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

        I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

      I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
      I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
      Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

      Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.
