4 Days Post Op - Help!! Port lump and pain!

Recommended Posts

I had surgery Wednesday 6/25. Day one following was awful. I needed help in and out of bed, etc. Now I am okay with the exception of the fact that my port area is a big lump like half of an egg cut long ways. It also can be felt pretty much at all times. It is kind of a stabbing pain. I just want to know if all of this is normal.

Thanks,

Kristin

yes, that is absolutely normal. the port incision will hurt worse than the others because the port is there and it is stitched to muscle. i had port pain for about 30 days after surgery. when you get the okay to exercise the pain will still be there but you have to exercise around the pain. i'm over 60 days post-op and i can still feel my port and will always be able to feel it. it's funny because i rub it all the time because i think of it as my "life line". when i eat too much it sticks out even further and i feel like an over done turkey!

yes it is normal... just move around as much as u can... get fresh air and make sure u drink lots of water...as long as your pain meds don't make u sick stay on top of taking them as well...

Oh my gosh! That is exactly what I feel like too! Like I am a turkey and I am done. My port sticks out too. It was painful a lot at first. It is getting so much better. It also felt like when I was pregnant and my son's foot was stuck under my ribs for five months. I was praying that I wouldn't feel pregnant for the rest of my life. It is getting better. The doc said that after I loose my weight that if necessary he can switch it to a low profile port in a quick procedure. Good luck.

I was banded on Friday 27th - my port area is sticking up like a goose egg - I was told that under no circumstances would be port show that it would be hidden - I realize I am swollen but I am not going to be a happy camper if this big round thing is going to always show. It hurts more than the other incisions but tolerable. The worse part for me is feeling out of it all the time on pain meds.

Rangerfan...I would rather have my big port sticking out than my big butt. If you are worried about your self-image how did you become morbidly obese? I will gladly take all of the imperfections of the surgery if it means I get to live a healthy life now.

I was banded 5/22/08 and my port incision definitely hurt more than the other incisions. I am a tummy sleeper and couldn't sleep on my stomach for about 2 weeks post-op because of the port. It still hurts some mornings when I wake up, but gets better thru-out the day. I think my port incision has stayed a little bit sore because my toddler is always elbowing me or kicking me (by accident) right in the port. Like he subconsciously knows where it is =)

I can feel my port. It feels like a little lump under my skin, but you cannot see it. I find myself feeling it a lot too. Like I am reminding myself that I actually went thru with the surgery.

I am not morbidly obese for one thing - need to lose about 40 lbs - doctor says 50 and I don't have a big butt for another thing but even if I did I would not want some big lump sticking out on my abdomen. This is the kind of response that is not helpful. I am trying to get genuine information. Thanks.

Sorry. Didn't mean to come off as a jerk. They make different size ports including some that are very flat. your doctor can switch it out for you when it is appropriate. I was just trying to make a point that it is a very small price to pay for all of the benefits you will reap. As a 26 year old that had to pay cash for his surgery I can tell that I am willing to suffer greatly if it means staying alive longer for my wife.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
