Recommended Posts

The new "New York Magazine" has an interesting article on bariatric surgery - entitled "Stomach Surgery to Get Thin, but Not Necessarily Happy". *This article can be accessed if you copy and paste the entire address below into your web browser.

I found it very interesting - and I could relate to many (not all) of the comments. I thought I'd share the link.

I thought this was an interesting read as well. However, I think it says much more about the people involved than about weight-loss surgery. They could just as easily have done a story (and I know they have) about sudden lottery winners losing their minds.

The point in stories like this seems to be that there's a dark side to having your dreams come true. Well, of course there CAN be, but it's by no means a given.

These ladies were on the Today show this AM, along with Al, telling a little of their story, basically pointing out the loss of weight was not the answer to their problems. I was more taken by their beauty after the weight loss than the story. Afterall, everyone has their own story.

Well, I suppose it all depends on what you think your problems are. So far, it has helped with my little "not breathing" problem quite nicely. But I don't think my weightloss so far is going to help me pass my finals tomorrow!

My DH's current weightloss has saved our marrage, so I suppose that is a plus on the losing side. I know there will be more challenges once he loses another 100 pounds though.

I loved this article...very good read, I was stuck on it, reading it to the end! Very interesting writer's perspective and interviews.

Like winning the lottery, I'd rather lose the weight and "suffer" through the adjustment period a more slender person. It seems we are always finding something within ourselves to rail against, I'd just as soon rail against a new improved bod. Suits me!

Wow, that article was written very well. Being that I have not had the surgery, it provides more insight for me. I don't expect the surgery to be the end-all of my problems. I just want life as a fat person to be a little easier....I would love to run. I want to be forced in to the mind set of what a "real" portoin size is.

The whole "real" portion thing is sarcastically funny to me, esp today. I thnk a week's worth of reading bandster stuff has given me that syndrome where you think you have every thing you read about ( can't think of the term). I went to a restaurant and got a meal and starting feeling sick looking at the huge portions that they gave me. I ended up throwing half of it away. I have also managed to convince myself that I have joint and back pain, although I haven't done anything strenuous all weekend. Well I'm going to a chiropractor today just to be sure though.

Sorry for going off topic a bit. But talking about portions, the other day a co worker (slender female) was eating lunch with me and was telling me to "eat more". I had this little bowl of Soup and a small portion of mash potatoes, which for me seemed a lot, but there is this skinny little girl telling me to eat more :)

Never thought something like this would ever happen to me.....

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
