Hysterectomy anyone?

Recommended Posts

I just had my yearly Pap smear and was really surprised to hear that I need to have a hysterectomy. I haven't really been having many symptoms. My doctor said I had a cystocele/rectocele. For anyone who doesn't know what that is,it's basically hernias. The bladder has dropped and is bulging into the vaginal wall on the front side and the rectum is bulging into the vaginal wall on the back. He wants to do a vaginal hysterectomy and anterior & posterior repair including a bladder tack within a year. I would like to hear from anyone who has had this surgery. How bad was it and how long was your recovery?

I had this done about 14 years ago. It was the best thing I had ever done for me up until I had the Lapband installed. No more Periods, no more mood swings nomore discomfort down there. It's fabulous. It took about 3 to 4 weeks to recover fully. The rectocele is the worst. Very difficult to go to the bathroom for a while afterwards. Probally a little more information than you wanted but just being honest.

Thanks for answering my question. I know it's not going to be fun but it's encouraging to know that after 3 or 4 weeks it will be OK.

I had that same surgery about 3 years ago. I had the hysterectomy for a different reason but the bladder tacking and the rectum fixed was for the same reason. I have MS and don't recover as quickly as other people. It was suppose to be 6 weeks recovery time and I didn't recover for 12 weeks, then I had to sit on a donut pillow for a month or 2. The surgery wasn't that bad in itself and I done ok with it. I also have diabeties which didn't help none either. Hope this helps a little.

I had a rectocele repair done about 15 yrs ago and the recovery on that was fairly easy. Five years later I had a hysterectomy with a bladder repair and that was harder. The hyst itself would have been fairly routine but having the bladder repair along with it made the recovery harder. The pain from the bladder part was very intense for me. Who knows, maybe I wasn't taking enough pain med's but I've had many surgeries and found that bladder repair to be the most painful (even over my two knee replacements). Unfortunately, the bladder is again prolapsed some. Don't let any of this scare you because I've heard many people have a much easier time and I may not be the norm. Good Luck!

I had all 3 done at the same time. Maybe that effected my recovery time too. But, I am glad I had it all at once and got it over with.

Thanks for sharing your stories with me. I probably won't have surgery until winter. My doctor said it would be good for me to maximize my weight loss beforehand for a quicker recovery.

I had a complete abdominal hysterectomy at age 40. I have never felt better! The worst part was that my belly overlapped my incision, so I would take surgical tape and tape up my tummy so I wouldn't put so my pressure on the incision.

Good luck!

I am 57 and just found out they want to do a hysterectomy to remove/fix fibroid tumors. They did blood work and said I was still producing estrogen. I was told that it can be done with 4 small incisions. Anyone had this done? Someone told me that the mood swings get worse after a hys....is this true?

i clicked on someone's ticker which took me to the web site. I picked the stuff I liked, copied it went back to my profile and edited the signature. pasted the ticker. Voila! there's probably an easier way, but I'm not very computer savy.

Well I can most of the time figure how to do something on the puter, but that ticker counter stumped me, even after Phyllis told me how to do it. I got my daughter to put it on for me and I watched her and of course I kept missing a step duhhhh :tongue_smilie: I kept missing the "edit sig. step" but all is well now.:tt1:

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
