Yay, glad you had a good (Accident free) run. I love to run outside, but it is simply too hot here already. I ran outside last Friday morning and about died..86 degrees and 84% humidity.

Yeah, running outside will be rare for me. It's supposed to be back up to about 86-87 tomorrow. I do not like summer...too hot for me. I'm already ready for fall.

I've been looking up 1/2 marathon training plans. There are ones that are only 9 weeks long! But 12 weeks is more typical.

Suzanne... WTG!!! 36 min is EXCELLENT!!!

Carol... Yeah!! 25min flat out! You're doing so great. Hard to believe you used to walk, and run a little bit!

Georgia... Accident free... good for you! I hear you on the heat. Its still beautiful here, but summer's a killer

Ok, its time to officially "motivate" me in your most un-gentle way! I haven't run since last Thur. I've been working way too hard this week, but have let that be the "excuse". I plan to run tomorrow... so again... kick me!

Kathy - Thanks. What are you waiting for? Get out there!!

Mac - you have my interest now. Do you have a link to the 1/2 marathon programs? I guess I'll have to do C25K again in late July when doc lets me run again. He said I could use a recumbent bike while I'm recuperating, so maybe I can maintain some of my muscle tone.

I also am not sure how I'll get to 13.1 miles with how little time I have in the evenings. Holy cow, how long does it take to run that far?

Carol - WTG! Good for you! You're on your way!

GA and DE - I couldn't imagine having to run down there in that heat. How do you beat the boredom of the treadmill?

I really understand about the heat/humididty. I live in S. FL after all. Thats why i usually run in the late evening just b4 dark or just after dark whenever i can. The 5k i'm working towards is an evening run... Oh, and i only run outside, cant do a treadmill and would be very nervous to run on one i think. Hubby tracked the mileage for me last nite since my car doesnt have tenths of miles on it. and i was wrong about my distance in the 25 mins...it was actually 1.75 miles! makes my time per mile just over 14 mins...going for the distance for this run in july, not time so much, then i'll worry about improving my time as i go on i think.

GA...just be careful.

TC, All

Carol

Kathy here's your tough-love-swift-kick-in-the-butt! Get out there, woman! The endorphins will help u work more efficiently and u know it. dont over reach for now, since time is an issue for you but even a short run will serve you well.

<3 ya

I just turn on my ipod and go. Yeah, it gets a little boring sometimes, but I just do it. I'd much rather run on the treadmill than outside in this heat. I'm looking forward to Fall and will most definitely hit the pavement then.

Thanks for the kick everyone. I have a conf call in a few minutes and then I'm off for my run!

Georgia... when you "hit the pavement in the fall", make sure its not "hit the pavement when I fall"!!! :smile2:

Carol... there is a great website that you can map your runs and it will give you the distance in miles or km. Its a bit fiddly, but beats driving for distance. Click on the site link below and then type in your city into the search area:

RunningAHEAD - Tools: Route Mapper

You can also join for free and keep a running log. I used this a lot before I got my Nike+.

LOL...hopefully I won't fall again!

I actually ran outside again tonight. It was almost dark when I started running, so it wasn't that hot. I got in 2 miles before I decided to call it quits.

Here's the FIRST plan. It has you running 3 days a week. I can't run more than that... my middle-aged body can't take it:

3-Day Half Marathon Training Plan at Runner's World.com

There are other plans though. Just Google "Half-marathon Training Plan" and you'll find TONS of them.

Okay, I finally ran yesterday...first time since last Friday. Mentally it was not a good run, I have too much on mind to "lose" myself in it like I normally do. I ran though...

Ok, its time to officially "motivate" me in your most un-gentle way! I haven't run since last Thur. I've been working way too hard this week, but have let that be the "excuse". I plan to run tomorrow... so again... kick me!

Kathy, get your butt out there and RUN :)!

GA and DE - I couldn't imagine having to run down there in that heat. How do you beat the boredom of the treadmill?

It is mind numbing to me and I have to have my music whereas when I run outside, I don't. The other option in the dead of summer is 97 degrees at 9pm, so no true choice.

Hey Everyone!

Mac - Thanks for the info. As soon as I recover from surgery, I'm going to do C25K again and start on training for a 1/2 marathon.

DE - Ouch, 97 degrees, I see why you do the treadmill. I think I will spring for a nicer treadmill for me soon. Mine is so loud, if I want to look at TV instead of iPod, I'd have to blow the speakers to hear it over the treadmill. ha ha

Kathy - Where are you? Hope you'll be coming on to report good news soon.

Speaking of good news. I ran a 5k again at my work picnic yesterday. I beat my Saturday time by FOUR minutes!! THIRTY TWO (32) MINUTES!!! I'm so excited.

This race required a partner and I ran with a Navy guy at my work. He was great, stayed with me and encourged me to really sprint it out in the end. It was nice and cool and overcast with a fairly flat run. Sat was hot and hilly, so I guess that made a big difference too.

By the way, I work for the Coast Guard and ALL of the other runners, except another team from my office, were in their 20's and super fit. When we started, they all sprinted off like rabbits and were soon out of sight. LOL

When we were almost at the finish line, my partner said "OK now increase your pace", then when I did, he said "Good, now increase your pace", then I did, he said "Good, now increase your pace!!!" Then as I was running out of wind and thought for sure my feet were going to trip over each other, he kept telling me to push push push!

I was on cloud nine all day. It was amazing!!!!!! The best part... he came back to the office today and bragged about me to everyone!

wow Suzanne! sounds like a great running partner very encouraging...but he had awesome material to work with!!! i'm very psyched for you!

well i did w7d1 lst nite. my distance was shorter for some reason. i did feel my feet dragging a bit during the run. it was kinda weird though. I felt more competant with the run ...less winded and definitely not as lightheaded at the end. so mixed results i guess. im actually looking forward to the next run on Sat i hope. Or, should i take 1 additional day to rest, wondering if i need a little extra time to recover???

anyway had a revelation of sorts last nite too. after i run i have a hard time with my band when i eat. it seems that every time i run i get stuck badly very soon after i start eating. and yes, i was following the band rules for eating. i called my bari nurse ths morning and she said that since the stomach/esophagus are muscles, i should drink something warm before eating, again following my doc's band instructions regarding drinking/eating. she said the warm liquid can help relax the esophagus in particular.

then she gave me a very nice NSV. she really complimented me on running and gave me lots of encouragement!

tc,

Carol

Suzanne~ WTG! That is so awesome!

First run this week was awful - thought I was going to die! Second run was pretty good, found my pace and was able to keep it up for 2 miles. Glad to be back out on the road, it really helps me destress from work!

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
