Couch to 5k.....come join me!!

Recommended Posts

MacMadam... what's the new picture? Is that you on the finish line of your recent Tri???

I have an NSV to share... I put on my skin tight jeans this morning straight from the dryer, and didn't have to suck it in. In fact, they could almost be considered loose! Yeah! The strength training and running combo is working!

A few of you may remember me. I was one of the orginal people on the thread and in the first group that started this program. Along with Kathybad, Renewedhope and several others. I had my lapband July 16 2008 and started at 200 pounds at 5 foot 2 inches tall. I started the couch to 5K like everyone else (I thought I would die!!!) I actually did ok for the first 4 weeks, but had to start doind each session for two weeks at a time. I stuck with it and my friends on this thread we invaluable. :smile2: Then I switched to my own music and kept progressing. Within a few short months I finished my 5k and could actually run 4 miles without stopping and with great pride. Unfortunately in March of 2009; I injured my ankle (fell off of my high heel) and had to have surgery. It is now July 2009 -

I am 150 pounds, I work out with a trainer 3 times a week; and first the first time since March I ran again last night. It was only about 1/4 mile; but I did it and it felt so good.

I am going to restart this program to get back to my 4 miles. I want to run a marathon some day.

Stuck with it no matter waht; it will work if you work.

kathy, it is so great that you are still lossing inches and you clothing fits loose (I feel a shopping trip coming on)

I can't believe it has been 1 year. I saw a picture of me last year- I dont even look the same. I feel fabulous! I love my new job, my new health, and my new body.

See everyone at the finish line.........

Just a follow up to my last posting. I just finished 2 miles straight without stopping. My ankle felt great, the breathing was good. Now, I have to say the people driving past me probably wondered if they should call 911! It wasn't fast and it sure wasn't pretty - but I did it. I also burned 490 calories. (I have to walk up a giant hill to get home too)

Good luck to all of you - baby steps. Everyone told me it would come back to me. I didn't believe them, but it did.

Ok....I did my midnight run, the 5k last night!!!

....let's just say I finished....LOL

My time was 1:00-06.

I took 1 hour and 6 seconds. I obviously walked a lot, and when I did run...I think some walkers passed me! :smile2:

Anyway, it was a wonderful experience and I'm so proud of myself that I even did it.

I'm going to find the next race and try to beat my old time. The cheers and strangers yelling for me to finish was exhilerating!

Thanks to everyone for all the info you post. Although I don't post all the time, I'm a big lurker.

Happy 4th,

Malissa

Malissa... Congratulations! You did your first 5k race! Great job!

Lynn... YEAH!!! You're all healed! Glad to have you back online and back to the world of running! WTG on the 2 miles. Trust me, you'll bounce back very fast.

We just finished a 5k walk with the dog and kids. My 5 year old DD is pooched! and so is the dog! I'm going to run tonight.

My DS b-day was really great yesterday. Went to see the movie Ice Age... too cute. Tomorrow we have his friends over for a party. We were surfing online for some cake ideas and he picked this one. So I've learned how to make fondant icing and I've made the square cake layers... so tonight I'm going to decorate. Cool thing is... I'm not at all worried about eating too much cake.

Kathy~ love the cake, how cool is that. I might have to give the cake thing a go. My DD has her b-day coming up and she wants a fancy cake - they are sooo spendy though! Take a pic and let us see how it turns out!

Im getting psyched for my race on the 18th! trying to convince a cpl of friends to do it with me as its also a fundraiser for a homeless orgainzation here. i didnt know that part till yesterday and i have a friend who is the dir of development there. a coincidence, but it'll be nice to know that i'll defintely have a friend there. may bring my kids too, hubby has to work that nite :smile2: ssdd unfortunately.

the other nite (thurs), i did 3.1 miles again. im happy knowing i can do it. im going for a RUN completion this race. i'll worry about speed another time.

Kathy WTG on your loose jeans.

My scale is finally going down again so i hope to be right behind you with my jeans. since its the fourth of july, im not planning to run tonite. too much going on. so, im planning to go tomorrow nite. will plan on 3 times next week and once the following week then taper till the race. whatcha think, my running buddies? sound reasonable?

one final thing! my sound is fixed on my puter so hopefully i'll be able to put together a good mix for the race to keep me motivated. yay me! YAY all of us!!!!!!!!

TC,

Carol

Carol... good job on the 5k run again. You're going to do great. Good plan for the running before hand. Also, on the day of the run, eat healthy but eat enough and drink plenty before hand. Stop eating at least an hour (or more) before your run.

Ok, finished the cake... not bad for my first try!

L.O.V.E. the cake! Great job! Now, do you want to do another and send it to Oregon?? LOL! I can't believe that is your first time. If I bust out and try it, I will post a pix - but don't get too excited.

yeah, Kristen this is my official C25k "graduation" run. planning to stick around though.

i gotta tell you though its the first thing in a long time that i set out to challenge myself with and i did it! well im doing it. have 2 weeks to improve my time. now, if the weather cooperates, i'll be fine. since i dont have a stopwatch of any kind except for my on my cell i, really have no idea how fast im doing. i figured out that just adding up the times of the songs isnt working since there's time (like 1-2 secs) between songs. gotta go run theres some daylight left and the thunder seems to have ended for now.

TC all,

Carol

Carol... I don't care if you take 60 min or 30 min to complete your first 5k. If you run the whole thing, that is a huge success and worthy of cheers and praise! You've done a couple of 5k's in the past... but this is your first fully run 5k. Time doesn't matter... the experience does! Your a winner in my record book and good luck to you!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
