Was Anyone Denied for NOT Losing on the Ins 6 mo Doctor Supervised diet??

Recommended Posts

Was anyone denied for not losing weight (or gaining) on the insurance required 6 month docotor supervised diet? I am so concerned about this. I lost about 9 lbs the 2nd to 3rd month because I had my tonsills out but ever since then, I have been adding maybe 1-2 pounds a month. I may be exactly the same on my last appt. as I was on the 1st one, or maybe a few pounds more at the most. Will this be a problem???

I don't know the answer to that, but I have the same concern. I just recently started the 6 month diet process, (2 months ago) and haven't lost any weight. My problem the second month was that I dislocated my kneecap and was forced to wear an immobilizer for 3 weeks, so I couldn't do much for the month. I wish you good luck and I will be glad when I get to where you are!

Thanks Tasha...I'll let you know how it goes. I'm hoping it's no big deal. If I could lose weight and keep weight off, would I need this surgery??? :)

Hi TracyDe...

I imagine some insurance companies are more lenient than others, just as some require a 6 month diet, and others don't. I know that when I went in for my first meeting with my surgeon (after all the pre-op tests and seminars had been completed) I was told that if I didn't maintain my loss (they required 5% of what I needed to loose, so that wasn't too bad or unreasonable), the doctor would cancel my surgery. There was a 6 week wait until surgery, during which time I got a bronchitis, so the surgery ended up being postponed anyway...for another 3 weeks. My surgery is scheduled for Thurs., July 3, and my weigh-in is on Wednesday. I'm pretty sure I am o.k. 'cause I've lost a few more pounds...not too much though. When I lost my weight at the beginning I ate Egg Beaters (made into a vegetable omlet with a LITTLE cheese) for Breakfast, 3-4 oz. of white fish and a vegetable for lunch, and 3-4 oz. of salmon for dinner, plus vegetables. That seemed to get me kick started with about a 7 pound loss in 10 days, then I added a couple of choices...for instance, oatmeal with vanilla Protein powder for Breakfast, tuna salad or egg salad for lunch (even a slice of bread) and chicken or beef for dinner, plus vegetables. I lost a bit slower, but I've lost about 22 pounds (only had to loose 11 to satisfy the doctor, but actually lost 17 when I went for the first weigh-in, and I have to maintain that 17 pound loss, or it is curtains) overall. I have really hit plateau recently, so I am glad that Thursday is my day. Don't give up hope; I'll be thinking of you and saying my prayers for both of us.

I'm impressed that you could lose the 17-22 pounds just waiting for the surgery. I only had to lose 6 and they delayed me a month because I hadn't done it by the end of my 6 months. I have Kaiser Permanente for insurance-- The bad news is that I weighed in and got the referral, then went on a 10 cruise to the Greek Islands... Now, I've got to lose most of it all over again before I meet with the surgeon!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
