I have decided to take the plunge. I want to get banded. I received my package from a local dr office and will mail it back tomorrow. I was told there is a 6 week wait for a consultation and a few months for surgery. I am 195 lbs and 5'1. I have been overweight for 10 years and want to make a healthy life change.

Hi, I was banded Jan 25,08 in Tijuana, mexico. I am around the same height and was around 185 lbs at the time. I have since lost around 45 lbs and couldn't be happier. I chose Mexico because the cost was a third of what it would have cost in Canada ($7500.00) and there was no wait time. From the time I made my decision to have the surgery to the actual surgery date was about 3-4 wks! My only regret is not having this done 25 years ago! I am able to eat anything in small quantities and I have excellent appetite control. i have had only 1 fill at about 6 wks post-op and have no need as yet to go for another! Feel free to contact me if you have any other questions.

mom2two: Hi, I think I posted to you on another website but just in case, be sure you research your aftercare carefully if you chose to go out of province or our of country. There are a few fill nurses in Washington who do fills if you have a vehicle and can get down there. The only doctor I know of in the Vancouver area that does fills for other doctors is a Dr. Woodhead but he will not do Mexican patients. Don't take my word for it though, contact him before going to Mexico and ask him. Also, remember there is more to aftercare than a few fills. For instance I had to fly back to Toronto to have my port position corrected because it had flipped. For me to get a free fill in Toronto,it costs me $1,000.00 to fly there, taxi and hotels and meals. My point is to go wherever you like with your eyes open as to the complete care and costs associated with the band. Assess whether or not you can afford to go back to Mexico, or down to Washington State, Calgary, etc. Sometime it is cheaper in the long run to use one of the two doctors in the Vancouver area who are both very competent. Doreen

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
