Sweet/Junk food eaters

I am wanting to know how many of you who love to eat sweets and junk food (think Cookies, candy, doughnuts, cake, etc.) have been successful with the lapband? I understand the rules of the lapband, Protein first, then veggies, etc. But I have also heard that sweet eaters don't do as well with the lapband....so those of you who love sweets; how have you done with the lapband?

I love food, especially junk food. Suprisingly I am so determined to lose weight and be healthy. I guess it has been my mindset, I really do not miss the goodies.

Hi Amy,

Sweets are now my worst enemy. I'm really struggling with my addiction to sweets, and because of it, my weight loss has stalled. In fact, I keep losing/gaining the same 5 lbs.

My doctor is pleased with my progress. I always tell him that I know I should be further along in my weight loss. He always tells me that I'm right up there with many of his patients. He has some patients who work their butts off and the weight doesn't come off. He's made it clear that he's being truthful with me, but in my heart, I know I should have lost more weight by now. I'm eating too much crap.

The one thing I can say is that I haven't had a drop of soda since before surgery, at the beginning of October 2007. I'm really proud of myself. The band and the risk of complication keeps the soda out of my mouth. I used to drink a lot of Mountain Dew.

I'm trying to tackle my addiction. I'm saying positive affirmations every night at bedtime. There's no doubt in my mind that the affirmations are a powerful tool, and I'm going to stick with it. I've started reading a book about food addiction called "Love Hunger."

So, do you have a sweet tooth? Are you concerned of sabotaging your weight loss?

Have you given up junk food cold turkey? Do you allow yourself any treats?

I do love sweets and have been learning not to eat them. Since I am type II diabetes I had to learn that first. I make due with some sugar free fat free stuff. And I love yogurt. If I can have just one small thing a day I am fine. Just has to be fat free, sugar free and after I have all my required Protein and veggies for the day. I think it will be easier with the lapband . But want also to hear from any other sweet lovers.

I love junk food. Before being banded I would sit at this computer and eat a candy bar or 2 and chips. I did it every night. When I decided i wanted to lose weight I knew I had to stop. I have a candy bar in my desk drawer thats been there since christmas. I hardly ever eat that stuff now. I will eat a sf fudge cycle 40 calories most days. If I go out to a party or wedding I allow myself to have a small amout of sweets. The best thing for me is not to do it at home.

I guess you'd call me a sweet eater...had 2 fudge bars today.

And the lapband has worked textbook for me.

Yes I too love sweets...unfortunately. I was just banded on June 23rd, so I have been on liquids for awhile. My plan is to really watch what I eat until I get to my goal weight, and allow myself to have treats when I go out to eat or soemthing, which isn't very often. I am worried, of course. Obviously, I am obese for a reason. I just hope that lapband will make it easier for me. Before, I could eat a whole bag of pepperedge farm Cookies. Baked goods are my weakness. I know the band is just a tool and I will have to use a lot of will power. This is an interesting thread....I am interested in hearing more!

I love candy. Sprees, milky way's, 100 grand, twizzlers,pixy stix, gobstoppers, gumballs, you name it I love it. Having surgery in less than a month, and I'm ready to give it all up. Or at least the majority of it until I get closer to my goal. I tell myself that they are not going to quit making this stuff in the next year, it's still going to be there.:thumbs_up: It's about quality in small numbers. I'm pretty anti sugar free. The stuff mostly all of it even Splenda makes me sick to my stomach if I have to much of it. I sometimes also get really bad cramping. And that is just from chewing to much Trident gum. So I'm a little nervous about my food options while on my pre and post op diet(life). But then I also know that I've been looking forward to this surgery for the last year . And longing to be slender and healthy for longer.:thumbs_up:

I too am (was!) a sweet eater.....in fact making Cookies, cupcakes, muffins, brownies, ect. was one of my daughter's favorite past times. I gave it up a month ago when I started my pre-op diet, and after I got my band two weeks ago, I started eating sugar free popsicles, and then I discovered sugar free fudsicles, and they seem to satisfy my sweet tooth.

As for how well I'm doing, I don't have much experience yet since I was just banded, but I just had my first post-op checkup today and I've lost 19 pounds. I honestly won't miss the sweets if it means that I keep doing that well!

Just because some of us are not doing too good doesn't mean you cant. Dont get discouraged like I did. You fight like he.. and overcome any addictions you may have to food. The band works if you do the work. It's really hard but I would hate to see someone get in the shape I have been in.

The best advice I can give you is....journal your butt off, especially your calories and stay on top off it. It will work!!! You CAN do this!!!

I was banded on April 7th...have lost 34 pounds, 16 more to go! I used to eat Cookies by the bag, ice cream by the pint (not every day but whenever I got the urge/craving). Since my surgery, I have had a cookie once or twice, no ice cream, and really very little that is sweet or baked. The really interesting part is that I no longer have cravings for that stuff.

When I was in the grocery store yesterday, I would walk through ALL the aisles and amazingly the bad stuff did not call out to me. It surprises me every time. When I am at other people's homes and they serve dessert I can take one or two bites and be completely satisfied.

My morning Protein shake and my nightly sugar free fudgesicle (sp?) seem to take care of my sweet tooth. BTW, I was also a bread and Pasta addict and have not had any Pasta and once in a while I have a piece of bread.

Hope this helps to encourage you that you can beat your sweet tooth...

Even before lap band I wasn't much on sweets except cheesecake and doughnuts but once in a while I would get a craving for a twix, my vice was (still kind of is) potato chips. I don't really crave sweets as much, chocolate Protein Shakes with bananas helps and some Sugar Free Chocolates. Then sometimes I crave ice cream. I just buy one of those tiny little ice cream cups (260 calories) at wal-mart, they are like $1, and I end up just eating a 1/4 of that just to get the taste and get rid of the craving. Now chips, I tried getting baked ruffles and had trouble with those, but pringles light or the fat free satify the chip cravings. I don't really have the cravings as much now though. I think the key is not deprive yourself, give yourself a treat (choose wisely) but really read the labels and ask is it worth it?

I AM (before and after lapband) the biggest Junk food Junky I know! I just love food. Not just junk, ALL food. But top it all off with something sweet? Oh yeah baby! BUT, since the band, I rarely have room after eating my meal and following the bandster rules. I just can't get it in. I do have it when I can get it in. But I always make sure I eat my meal first. The last thing I want is to be a failure at this. I didn't go through all this to fail. And I certainly don't want to lose my hair because of poor eating habits! Yes, I get a taste of anything I want, but that's about as much as I can take, a taste! I love my band!

i crave sweet!! love everything about them...there's probably not a desert out there i wouldn't eat! =) since being banded i of course don't indulge like i once did...for 1 i can't...i just can't consume a whole piece of cake without it making me very very uncomfortable. pretty much i'll take a few bites of what i want and then be happy with that. the thing that has helped me lose the most is exercise. i burn quite a few calories and eat so few that a few bites here and there hasn't hindered my weight loss so far...im sure at some point i'll hit a wall and maybe need to rethink my diet a little bit =)

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
