Long Island - Psychology evaluation?

Recommended Posts

I'm helping my sister learn more about the lap band procedure. Her doctor told her she will need an evaluation by a psychologist before he will approve her. From what I've read on the internet, it is a common requirement, but insurance likely won't pay for it.

Does anyone know how much the psychology exam costs in the Long Island area? Any recommendations for doctors who do it?

Can anyone who has done it tell me a little about the exam?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

First off, your sister is very lucky to have you as her support team.

I am going thru Dr. Geiss' office and while they have their own 'preferred' psychologists that they'd like for you to go thru you can go to any in-network psych if you choose to.

I paid $250 for the 1-hr appt. We dabbled in my personal history, what kind of support system I have, what do I expect from the surgery, and what my current eating habits are, and if I'd had any eating disorders in the past. They just want to make sure that you are in the right mind-set and don't have unrealistic expectations of what this surgery will do.

If you'd like the name/number of the 2 psychs on Dr. Geiss' list you can PM me and I'll provide them to you.

Good Luck to your Sister.

Hi Elisa, Welcome!!

I was banded by Dr Powers. He is Dr Geiss's partner. We have a Long Island thread if you are interested. Just look down the New York list.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
