OK everyone be gentle with me, but be honest. The thing is that I have been on my pre-op diet for almost 2 weeks now. surgery is Friday. I have been doing really good and have lost 12 pounds. Then today (2 days before surgery) I cheated big time. I had a sandwich and some chips and that's it for today. How bad does this sound, and should I just drink Water tomorrow? I even went on vacation through these two weeks and did'nt cheat once, I don't know what came over me today. Thanks!

Just continue with your diet, this was just a bump in the road. It happens to the best of us. You will be fine.

First off, I would for sure tell the Dr. you don't want to find out too late that he can't do the surgery.

But more importantly I'd really have a frank discussion with myself and figure out why I did that. You probably are going to still be okay to have the surgery, but the post op diet isn't any easier. What will you do then? It will be a much more serious issue if you don't follow the post op diet with the band. You could damage it, cause slippage, etc.

I'm sure you will be fine. My doctor did not put me on a pre-op diet so I can pretty much eat whatever I want until the day before surgery (within reason of course). He will be putting me on the post-op diet for sure though! I say just start again with the pre-op diet ~ Friday is almost here! Good luck! My surgery is July 2.

I'd just put it behind me and move on. Dont just have Water, get back on your proper diet.

Its really better not to cheat of course, but realistically very very few patients have livers so large that the operation cannot be performed. My doc's literature says its less than 1% of surgeries that he cant do. You've done the diet and ARE going to continue on the diet, your liver will have shrunk.

What you've done is probably not significant, certainly not as significant as eating that AFTER the surgery. It is REALLY hard to do that liquid diet pre surg, really hard. And it will probably be really hard to get back on the wagon now because you've just tanked your glycogen up again and set your insulin racing, lol. But stick with it, you're nearly there.

Thanks everyone for your advice, and I will be back on the wagon now. I do realize that I cannot do this post-op and am really serious about this. I have gone from many cokes a day and eating fast food everyday to this is my first time to screw up in two weeks. And like I said, I don't know what came over me. But I am proud of my 12 pound weight loss

Next time you're tempted to cheat ask yourself if it's worth taking a chance that they might have a problem during surgery. The diet is to shrink your liver so that they can move it out of the way. You're probably ok right now but there are doctors that get in there and see that the liver is too big and simple stitch the patient back up. You need to decide if you're going to do what it takes to be successful. If you're not, don't waste your time getting surgery.

That sounds harsh and I don't mean for it to be. However, this is a life style change and there are stages where not following directions can lead to disaster. Also, if you can't adjust to the way you need to eat after the band the least you'll have to worry about is failure.

Treat yourself good. This is a wonderful journey that you deserve.

Vicki

P.S. Again, I don't mean to sound harsh. I apologize if I do.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
