I got my surgery date yesterday!! It is August 18th. I am a little nervous because I start my student teaching the next Monday. That only gives me 7 days to recover. I am a big baby when it comes to pain. I have never had surgery before and am a little nervous. I am also nervous because my dad had the gastric bypass seven years ago and he died from a massive heartattack after the second surgery to repair stitches. Can anyone tell me what to expect the day of the surgery and about the pain afterwards? Do you think I will still be in pain when I start my student teahing?

i had a "text book" recovery and was back at work wed following a friday surgery.

my recommendation to you is to follow your doc's orders FAITHFULLY!!!!! if he says lose some weight before hand--do your best. if he says liquid diet x-days before hand--do your best. if he tells you to get the extra strength gas-x GET IT--makes a big difference.

the more closely you follow the preparatory plan, the more likely surgery will go like clockwork and your recovery will be smooth.

i also recommend you find a "mother" to watch over you and give you TLC following the procedure. to keep you drinking water/broth, keep you walking and moving following the procedure (to get rid of the gas...).

BELIEVE that you will heal well and quickly and don't let your body tell you otherwise.

peace and smooth sailing.

ABelew, it's fine. Very little pain involved with the surgery. The band is light years ahead of the old bypass procedure. I was back to work in 4 days with minimal discomfort. There is an entire thread devoted to what to expect on surgery day (try looking under the "general" forum, or using the saerch feature). Bottom line, you'll do fine....no worries!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
