Good morning all. I am a 56 year old male who had LB surgery on 4/9/08. I have lost 61 lbs. to date. It has not been an easy adventure for me. I had initially intended to have GB but the Cardiologist from from my surgeons screening team and my cardiologist met and decided because of my cardiac history LB would be better.

So I went ahead with the LB surgery and had a cardiac event and a one day hospital stay turned into a 5 night stay. I was started on coumadin and sent home. As the days progressed I kept getting weaker and weaker. I visited my surgeon and he said I had an infection and started me on Keflix. Big mistake!! Two days later my wife came home from work and found me semi-unconscious on my bed.

At the emergency room it was determined I had a GI Bleed and they ran a tube down my nose into my stomach and blood started to pump out. Doctors told my wife it's a good thing I was brought in because if I had fell asleep, before too long my other organs would have eventually started to shut down. This turned into another 6 day hospitalization, 4 in Intensive Care and 2 days in a step down unit.

To make a long story short, my surgeon should have known to not start me on Keflix because Coumadin and Keflix should not be mixed.

I am really torn about continuing to see this surgeon as it has been one thing after another. last week when I went to get a fill for my band he couldn't find the port and I had to go and have an X-Ray to determine where the port was. I told you it goes on and on.

Sorry for the ramble but this is the first time I have really shared/vented to anyone beside my wife and kids. I continue to lose weight but it gets gets slower and slower. Being that I have never had a fill for my LB it seems like it is more of me dieting than the LB helping me. Now I ask myself why didn't I just go on a diet, (probably because there isn't a diet I haven't tried.)

Anyway that's my story and I'm sticking to it. Good luck to all and may your clothes start to hang on you.

See Ya'll in the forums.

Sorry you had such a hard time. Sounds like you're doing good with the band though! Congratulations on all that weight loss. I had my band around the same time you did (4/11/08) and I've only lost 20 lbs ...But, I think if I didn't trust MY Dr. anymore I would go elsewhere for the fills. If he's some kind of hack he may puncture your band hose or something. It could be worth it to go ahead and pay someone else to do the fills. Thanks for your positive words to all of us...may your clothes do the same!;)

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
