Friends - no pressure then

Recommended Posts

What is it with this friends number? So I have no friends - is that supposed to make me feel better, more inspired to lose weight, more wanting to come visit this site? Whose idea was that then?

Loads of people who visit this site seem to have no friends. :confused2:

Don't you think that people with friends already know it? This is a silly no-use addition to the site and should be got rid of.

I'm going to get flamed for this post, but since I have no friends I don't care.

Yeah I don't get it either. What, is it a popularity contest or something? Is there some benefit to singling out certain people to be your chosen friend vs accepting everyone equally? Seems to me we should be a community of friends supporting each other...

Of course this is coming from another friendless person

Maincat- the more I get to read your posts, the more I think you just like to rile of the crowd.

I like the friends thing. I mean, keeping track of friends. I guess I don't really care if it's on the right of my posts or not. I don't look at people who have 0 friends as being friendless. I don't care. I add people so that I can remember to check on them and their progress. Don't put so much value on the feature.

Then again, I liked the rep thing too, so maybe I'm not one to say. :tt2:

Negative much?

It's not a popularity contest, it's not a competition. It's just a feature, a tool, a widget that allows people to connect even more. Just because you have friends doesn't make you popular; no friends listed doesn't make you a leper. It's a few button pushes, that's all. It doesn't mean anything to anyone but the person(s) who decided to push the button... so how does that affect you, exactly?

Are you bitter because you invited some friends and they declined? Maybe they didn't even notice the link awaiting their confirmation. Option two is that you haven't tried to make friends, but you feel a need to decry the whole system because people aren't knocking down your door?

Gee, I wonder why?

The boards are your support, your family and friends are your support. You are (or should be) your own biggest supporter. What does it matter that people like to make connections in communities like this?

Hell, if you don't care, why post it at all?

There are a group of us banded by the same doctor that like to post and e-mail. They are my friends. I also have people that were banded the same time as me or we share common interests or darnit I just like them - they are my friends. It's not a popularity contest. I like to e-mail them and check on them and to see if they are online when I am. It's just another way to reach out and communicate with fellow bandsters. They've always been there under your CP - now the number just shows up under your avatar. It's no big deal.

I logged on the other day and found that I was friendless . . . it was a big surprise to me :0). I have been adding people with interesting posts but it has been a little sporadic.

What happened to reputation points? We used to have those well . . . but I think I only had 1 point.

So I have a bad reputation and very few friends . . . who woulda thunk it :0)

Does anybody wanna be my friend??? I promise I don't bite or smell bad . . . :0)

Now that I have read a couple more responses, it does make sense to have friends but i think maybe I just did not really understand this feature. It appears that some people use it a lot and a some of us either don't really pay it much attention or understand it fully. Of course, I am new to the forum world and there is a lot I don't know yet.

I do check up on people that interest me or I have had conversations with, but I usually check recent posts by them. Having them as friends might be a more efficient way to go.

To those who answered without getting their panties in a bunch...thanks for the explanation. My post was meant to be more of a lighthearted inquiry about the whole process, nothing more.

 <<sniff sniff>>...I haven't been a good friend have I? Maybe because I do bite a bit - but I promise it doesn't hurt! Is it my smell? I swear it's 5th avenue - did the lady at the mall jip me?

Jodi - to you and MrsFlipFlops I apologize. It wasn't you guys to whom my reply was aimed at (I had hoped that was obvious, but maybe not).

I just don't care for caustic let's-cause-a-fight-just-because type people/posts. It's one thing for people to disagree and debate a topic, but to just come out swinging to be a jerk, and claim you don't care... yeah, that bugged me.

Sadly, you got caught in the crossfire. Sorry ladies.

I have a couple of friends but the way I approach the site, it makes no difference so I guess I might as not have bothered.

I'm not big on this feature. I have a Facebook account I never use. I guess I have other ways to check up on my friends.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
